Edinburgh to Saint Andrews

I'm planning a trip to Scotland based in Edinburgh, and one of the days I'm there I'll be taking a day trip up to Saint Andrews...I've heard the best way to get there is to take the train from Edinburgh to Leuchars then a bus from Leuchars to Edinburgh, is there anyway you can buy a combined ticket for this journey (including both the train and bus)? Also, do you think I should purchase train tickets ahead of time or will I have no problem buying them right there at the station before I depart? any help or links to websites would be appreciated! Thanks!

"then a bus from Leuchars to Edinburgh" You mean bus to St. Andrews -

No need to buy the train ticket ahead of time and you just pay for the bus when you board. The buses run very often - every 15 mins on weekdays.

You can also take a cab. It is only about 4.5 miles from Leuchars station to St Andrews - though the bus would of course be cheaper.

There is also at least an hourly direct coach service from Edinburgh bus station to St Andrews, taking 1 hour 45 min.

The bus would indeed be cheaper however do yourself a favor and take the train.

Wow - blast from the past - welcome back Stellarossa!

A highlight for me of the train (and i guess also on the bus which takes the same route) is when the tracks go over the famous Firth of Forth cantilever bridge.

Thought I'd nose around and see what's up on the site these days.

I feel able t make sweeping generalizations now that I'm an American.
