Edinburgh to London

I will be motoring from Edinburgh to London (Gatwick) 9/29 - 10/1. I'm going down the east side of the country. Any suggestions for stops along the way and nice b&b's?

Oh wow, what great scenery there will be! Although I didn't drive this route, I did take a train from Oxford to Edinburgh, which went up the middle of the country. If you have time, I would suggest stopping in York. The cathedral there is breathtaking and the town is easy to see in a day or less.

I think it would be worth it for you to cut in towards Stratford upon Avon and Oxford also. The medieval architecture and history are so rich. I was a student there for a summer and absolutely fell in love with it. A great way to explore the surrounding countryside is by bike and there are some tours available there. But it just depends on your time constraints.

I hope this gives you some ideas. Good luck.

If you are going down the east side it would be a bit much of a detour over to Warwick/Oxford.

You only have 3 days so you won't be able to see everything - but here is a short list of things enroute:

The Scottish Borders, Bamburgh and Alnwick castles, Hadrian's Wall, Durham, York, Cambridge. Most of these are worth a day's visit or in the case of the Borders, 3 or 4 days.

One practical itinerary would be Hadrian's wall and then overnight 9-29 in Durham; To York in the early AM and then overnight 9-30 in Cambridge; Cambridge around the east side of London on the M25 to LGW.

Thank you so much - such useful information. Great itinerary suggestion janis. Cate22, I will be taking a tour north that goes through Oxford. Also, I will have 2 1/2 free days in London so I plan to try to go to Blenheim Castle/Salsbury one day and perhaps Brighton another day. Have been to London several times so will just hit Buckingham (the tour) and Harrod's.
Thanks again.

Just returned from a trip where, in a week, we motored from Edinburgh south along the coast through Alnwick (BEAUTIFUL castle) west along Hadrian's wall, Lake District, York, then south to London. I have a suggestion for a good B&B in Haltwhistle, a nice small town along Hadrian's Wall: Ashcroft B&B, unbelievable gardens, tended by an 80 year old lady.
