There are trains almost every hour from Waverley station in Edinburgh, so that part is easy. Getting the cheapest fare is often very frustrating. The ticket office at the station may be able to help you. If cost is the main factor and time is not a concern, consider taking the bus. It is an 8-hour trip and costs much less than the train, at least before gas prices went through the roof.

The following information may be of help to you. I have just done a quick check and the following fares were available for July 3rd (Saturday):
Off Peak Single - £24
Apex Single - £54
Super Advance Single - £65
Saver Single - £86
Open Single - £93
Trains leave Edinburgh at frequent intervals with the early morning ones leaving at 06:15, 07:00, 07:30, 08:00 and 08:35 with a journey time of around 5 hours. For the best views, get a seat on the left-hand side of the train.
The Off Peak, Apex and Super Advance tickets all have to be bought in advance and restrict you to a specified train.
The Saver and Open tickets can be bought on the day of travel and for this particular day and journey can be used on any train.
www.gner.co.uk will have further details. To buy tickets in advance will require registration.

We found taking an easyjet flight from EDI to London Luton a lot less expensive (and time consuming) than the train. Easyjet has really cheap one-way fares and the flight only takes about an hour.
From Luton, you can take the Thameslink train into London's Kings Cross station.

What day of the week are you travelling? As has been mentioned you may well be able to pick up a cheap flight on Easyjet (to Gatwick or Luton) or BMI (to Heathrow). These airlines price their tickets as individual, single trips so you are not penalised for not getting return tickets.
If you go down this route I would book as soon as possible for the better fares.
