Edinburgh to Loch Ness

Quick ? -
Does anyone how long it takes to get from Edinburgh to Loch Ness?
Thinking of doing a day-trip (if that is possible)...
Best transport?
Are there tour operators that you can just book while in Edinburgh?
Thanks - E.

Check train times from Edinburgh to Inverness on www.nationalrail.co.uk. If you get the 0840 train from Edinburgh, you can have lunch in Inverness then get Jacobite Cruises' boat (www.jacobite.co.uk) to Loch Ness and back. Return from Inverness at 1830 or have something to eat, get the 2013 train and get back to Edinburgh at midnight.

No personal experience as we drove when we were in Scotland in May, but these day trips look interesting and reasonably priced:

http://www.scotlinetours.co.uk/html/lochness.html (Leaves from Edinburgh; covers Glencoe and entrance to Urquhart Castle)

Here's the website for the Jacobite Cruises if you want to take the train to Inverness as suggested above:
http://www.jacobite.co.uk/

This tour also leaves from Inverness:

Here's a website with a number of tours from Edinburgh including Loch Ness:

I'm sorry if this is too late- I was on holiday.

Try Haggis Backpackers or Rabbie's Tours or LRT tours all from Edinburgh. they're minibus day tours, and meant to be very good value

Thanks for the info.

One more question for the folks who have been there, did they find it worth the trip?

Keith, I'm going to avoid answering your question and just say, that, if you want to go, you'll find it worthwhile. Especially if the sun shines

We enjoyed our visit to Urquhart Castle, but otherwise, seeing Loch Ness certainly wasn't the highlight of our trip. Many will tell you that there are other lochs in Scotland that are more beautiful.

Not sure the name of it, but there is a tour group that takes day trips by bus up to Lock Ness. They have a desk inside a store just outside Edinburgh Castle.

Why not go to Loch Lomond instead? It's much closer to Edinburgh and more accessible, (about an hour from Glasgow) and quite lovely-there's a National Park built around the loch now. The major difference of course, is that there's no monster there. (smile)

'Twas God who built that National park; we just gave it a name.
