Edinburgh to Ile of Skye
 

Hello i will be driving from Edinburgh to the Ile of Skye and was wondering what would be a good scenic route to take, thanks for your insight.

How many days are you taking for the drive?

And just to add -- there is no route between the two that <i>isn't</i> scenic . . .

And if you really want to enjoy the scenery, you might consider taking a train! :-)

M8 through Glasgow then via the Erskine Bridge up the A82 via Loch Lomond, Rannoch Moor, Glencoe and Fort William then the A87 at Invergarry to Kyle of Lochalsh via Glen Sheil and Eilean Donan castle and then onto Skye via the Skye Bridge. Lovely views of the Western Highlands all the way from Loch Lomond onwards.

Takes longer and much more traffic than via Stirling or via Perth (both of which are easily as scenic as via Glasgow.

The straight run through Glasgow on the M8 is a breeze at any time other than rush hour and opens up drive along Loch Lomond side which has recently been massively eased road widening at the former choke points at the northern end of the loch.

There should be a "by" in there somewhere.

Are you using the Maaqliag Ferry to get to Skye or are you wanting to use the Skye bridge?

Ile of Skye? Did the French conquer Scotland?

Where the hell is Maaqliag?!!

I think Maaqliag is Mallaig. You can go by the bridge and come back by the ferry or vice versa. That way you can see both scenic routes.

But one day to drive to Skye, stay the night, then go back? Or go where? That's a lot of driving, not much time for Skye.

A very good question - I haven't a clue what happened to my fingers there. It should of course read Mallaig Ferry! Another alternative would be the lovely small Glen Elg Ferry...

If you meant there and back in one day -- nope -- no way, no how.

Edinburgh to even just Broadford (just barely on Skye and not in the most scenic bits) is a 5 to 6 hour drive w/o <u>any</u> stops. So you'd be in the car 12-ish hours plus photo stops, meals, rest stops . . . and not even see much of Skye. All the way to Portree and back (again w/o exploring anything of the island) would mean an extra nearly 2 hours added on to that 12 . . .
