Edinburgh to Hadrain's Wall

I would like to take a day trip from Edinburgh to Hadrian's Wall. Is this feasible?
If so, does anyone have any recommendations as bus, train, taxi etc.
I don't need to spend a lot of time there, but just want to take it in.
Thanks Lewis

a rental car for the day would be the easiest - but you didn't give that option so next best would be a train to newcastle from where you can either take local buses along the Wall or take a guided tour.

It is nearly 75 miles just to the wall w/o exploring along it - so I don't think you'd want to consider a taxi.

I agree with Janis, however, you also might consider taking the train from Newcastle to Hexham for the bus or even Haltwhistle and then the local bus or even a taxi to and from one of the more well parts of sights. In the middle of last winter I used a taxi from Haltwhistle to Vindolanda fort. (remains of a large Roman fort). I then took a local bus back to Haltwhistle. Then you could do another loop to Housesteads then back to the Haltwhistle train station and then retracing back to Edinburgh.

rogerdodger has the best idea - I forgot about the train from Newcastle west to Hexham/Haltwhistle.

Once you are in the area - the local buses will get you everywhere. But get an early start - there is a LOT to see.

The Hadrians Wall bus AD122 stops within a mile of the Wall at a number of points. I think you would get the best feel for it in a short time if you went

- first to Housesteads, where there is a substantial excavation of a fort and you can see the Wall snaking up on to the surrounding crags (if you want to walk along it for a while, please make sure you've got proper footwear and weather protection)

- and then to Vindolanda (much the biggest collection of Roman artefacts, although actually the Vindolanda fort was part of an older system).

I thought train to Hexham or Haltwhistle would add more options but the way the timetables work out, it does make sense to catch the AD122 direct from Newcastle:

Edinburgh 0800 arr Newcastle 0929
Bus AD122 leaves from outside the station (to the right of the exit) at 0940, arr at Housesteads 1137.

If you miss the bus in Newcastle, you can get the train to Hexham or Haltwhistle and pick up the bus there, but there are some long gaps in the timetable:

www.hadrians-wall.org/Plan_Public_Transport.aspx
www.nationalrail.co.uk to check the train timetables.

The last through bus leaves Vindolanda at 1632, arr Newcastle 1806, enabling you to catch trains to Edinburgh at 1840, 1846, 1854 taking about an hour and a half.

There is a later bus from Vindolanda to Hexham station for trains to Newcastle (1845, 1904, 2020 and 2115).

Some notes on my trip there:
