Edinburgh/St Andrews
 

I am going to Edinburgh mid May. I am a bit anxious about two hotel reservations I have made through online sites: Apex International or Knights Residence. Any information on either would be greatly appreciated. I also would like to know what is worth seeing there. There are so many choices and we will be there 3 days.
Also would like recommendations on St. Andrews accommodations and sites to see. Thanks

We stayed at the Apex a couple of years ago after driving into Edinburgh without a reservation. Several B&B's on the S. edge of town were full and I called the Apex (found it in a book).Late in the afternoon we got a good price for a LOVELY room looking RIGHT out at the back of the castle, lit up beautifully at night.(a block away and UP). The hotel was quite nice, good location,(only about three blocks UP a hill to High Street and the Royal Mile), lovely room, good breakfast. We did , however,have sort of a half-bad experience in the restaurant attached on the front, but that was nothing to do with the hotel.

We have stayed at Aslar House B&B on North Street in St. Andrews twice now and find the rooms comfortable, your hosts quite friendly, and the breakfast very good. As in much of the center of St. Andrews, the parking is a problem but manageable if you understand the rules.

You will have no problesm at the Apex. It's better than average, a bit-above-budget business traveller type accommodation and the International has a great location. It's also got a very nice bistro. I have three files on Edinburgh, which I will email if you contact me direct.

I know nothing about Knight's.

I have stuff on St Andrews too. As to accommodation, if you can afford it go for the Rusacks Marine; next down, the Ruflets, next down the Scores.

Personally I'd rather be out of town and would choose somewhere down the coast a bit

The Knights Residence isn't a hotel. I believe it's a self-catering apartment facility.

I had Christmas lunch at the Apex Hotel's Heights restaurant last Christmas and the food was excellent. The view of the castle is absolutely fantastic. Don't know about the rooms though, but I think the location is very good for tourists.

Stayed at the Apex last year, and had a nice room and friendly service from Andrew the concierge (still there? who knows?) Good location, free breakfast at the time with the rate we paid, nice view of castle looming above, casual bar on site to get the evening off to a good start, we walked everywhere from there. And they give you your very own rubber ducky for the shower!
