Anybody have recommendations for great food in Edinburgh? We will take any suggestions as far as price, style of cuisine, but it must have good ambience. Looking for both lunch and dinners.

I love the Grain Store on Victoria St for consistently good food and service, and pleasant atmosphere. Great for a long, boozy lunch.

For good seafood, head down to the Leith area and have lunch at The Shore, a pub-restaurant at number 3, the Shore.

For excellent pastries and coffee, try Patisserie Florentin at 4 -6 St Giles Street (just off the Royal Mile).

Bann's, at 5 Hunter Square (just off the Royal Mile opposite the top of Cockburn st) is arguably Edinburgh's best (and certainly best known) vegetarian restaurant.

Nargile, on 73 Hanover Street, is a great, authentic Turkish restaurant serving wonderful metze.

Igg's, at 15 Jeffrey Street (behind Waverley Station, not far from the Royal Mile & North Bridge) is a nice Spanish-cum-Scottish restaurant.

Certainly our favorite in edinburgh

Strangely enough, DH and I had some great apps and FANTASTIC margaritas (and I'm picky) at a MExican restaurant on the Royal Mile...sadly, I didn't remember the name. However, I know it is pretty far down the hill-near Canongate...

I second Martin's -- Martin is a character and the cheese tray is unique. And the food is superb also :)

The Mexican you mention is called Pancho Villas. We tried it after seeing it in Lonely Planet and must agree it was fantastic - atmosphere, food and drink.
Good for cheap and tasty snack lunch is Chocolate Soup where there is a choice of about 6 soups and loads of different sandwiches each day. Also great Hot Chocolate and Coffee.

No, I wasn't, sorry. I posted the question just before I went to bed.

My current top spot is Rogue in Morrison Street. I'm also very fond both of the Marque in Causewayside and the Marque Central in Grindlay Street.

The Atrium is traditionally Edinburgh's top eatery.

However, more downmarket but still fun eating can be had at

1. Viva Mexico in Cockburn Street
2. A place at the Charlotte Square end of George Street I can't remember the name of but it's just a number, like 56 or 72 or something,
3. Indigo Yard
4. Cafe Vittoria
5. the Brasserie at the Haymarket Apex.
6. The Siam Erewan
7. the veggy Indian place on the south side- the name's gone.

For fine dining try the restaurants at The Balmoral (hotel) and the Scotsman (hotel) comfortable surroundings, and for those of you who take tea - the Palm Court at The Balmoral is excellent.

Sheila, I imagine the veggie Indian place you're thinking of is Kalpna on St Patrick's Square...?

Check out HALDANE'S

You'll never find it on your own; ask a taxi driver or concierge for directions. It is located in New Town in the basement of a small restaurant called The Albany.

GREAT traditional Scottish food and top-notch service. Huge wine list. Not many tourist diners, mostly locals.

THE WITCHERY is also very good.

A tip on the Witchery (which is very expensive for dinner) is that they have a light lunch menu which is excellent for L10 for 2 courses. We had a really good meal at Stac Polly in Dublin Street -- excellently prepared local ingredients.
