Edinburgh Pubs
 

We will be in Edinburgh for 4 days, and are interested in eating in some great pubs. Can anyone give me a few suggestions? Thanks, Cindy

Deacon Brodies, The Bank Hotel, The Royal McGregor, The Worlds End, The Filling Station - all of which are on the Royal Mile.

Also while not a pub, Bella Pasta had the best lasagna I've ever had, on the corner of the Royal Mile and North Bridge.

The Cafe Royal (*) & the Guildford Arms (*) on West Register Street, the Abbotsford in Rose Street, the Cloisters on Brougham Place, Bennet's (*) on Leven Street, Whigham's Wine Cellars (*) on Hope Street, the Dome on George Street (*)(includes the Dome cafe-bar & restaurant + Frazer's bar), the Cambridge on Young Street, any of the pubs on The Shore at Leith (my favourite is The Shore, i.e. The Shore pub on the street called The Shore); the Waterfront on Dock Place at Leith (eating in cosy historic bar (*) + conswervatory restaurant).

A bit out of the city (but doable by no. 42 bus or taxi), the Sheep's Heid (*) at Duddingston - the city's oldest pub.

Those I've asterisked have particularly good historic interiors.

Some only do food during the daytime, up until early evening.

For a couple more, where food is secondary, I'd add Sandy Bell's (music - aka Forrest Rd. Bar, near the University - famous) and I must doff my whatever to the St. Vincent, at the foot of Frederick street (look for a pub next to a hulking somewhat gloomy church). 14p for a pint of heavy. Those were the days.

Gardyloo, bitter was 14p a pint when I was first a student !! You're right, the St Vincent is a good wee pub, though I don't know if they do food or not.

Oh, thinking about that area (Down the hill in the New Town), I should add the Cumberland Bar in Cumberland Street. I'm sure it does food but probably only at lunchtime. In the unlikely event the weather's good enough to sit outside, it has a beer garden too, as does the Sheep's Heid.

I believe the St Vincent's dining options extend to salt and vinegar v. other crisp choices.

And the Sheep's Heid has two skittles alleys to boot! What's not to love about the place? (Answer - warm wee heavies after a few drams. Oy.)

Ahhh, skittles. More fun than bowling, better for you than the candy. (if you don't count the beer/whisky you drink while playing!)

The Cramond Inn (in Cramond)and the Starbank (in Leith- well, nearly)aretwo more, and the Old Chain Pier on the other side of the road from the Starbank is good too.

The Golden Rule in Gorgie does good beer.
