Edinburgh on a Sunday---everything closed??
I'll be arriving in Edinburgh on a Sunday. Anyone know whether everything ( shops, museums, cafes) will be closed? If so, any suggestions on how to spend my time that first day?
|
You'll find plenty open, I wouldn't worry. Museums, cafes and major shops in the centre will mostly all be open.
|
Perhaps a Sunday service at Old St. Paul's - beautiful service and exquisite music in a pretty 13th century church right off the Royal Mile. I suggest you look inside even if you are not there at the time of the service.

Some of the museums are closed ... be sure to do your research before so you won't be disappointed.

All of the major museums are open, though some don't open until noon. That includes the National Galleries (incl. National Gallery, National Portrait Gallery), National Museums of Scotland (incl. Museum of Scotland, Royal Museum, Gallery of Modern Art), National Trust properties (incl. Georgian House, Gladstone's Land). Also the Castle and Holyrood Palace, including the Queen's Gallery, are open.

The National Galleries are now open from 10 on Sundays, but I think the National Museums don't open until 12.
There is a free bus which runs every 45 minutes between the 4 National Galleries. KT: being pedantic, but the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art is part of the National Galleries, not the National Museums :-) |
Thanks, everyone. I appreciate your taking the time to answer. So very excited about my trip!

Caroline, you're so right about the Gallery of Modern Art. What was I thinking?
BTW, I should have been clearer -- I didn't mean that all the places I listed open at noon on Sunday, just that they're all open on Sunday. |
