Edinburgh in mid JAN?

I am planning to go to Edinburgh mid Jan so how will the weather be? I will be staying at either the BAlmoral or the George Intercon. Anybody stayed in them?

The days will be very short - dark before 4PM. The weather will be cold most days - could be stormy. But winter in Edinburgh is not as cold or snowy as in the NE or midwest USA.

I was there in mid-January in 2001. It was chilly, but not too bad. Never rained the entire week I was there. And the best part is that there were no crowds. I went up to the castle on a Sunday morning and pretty much had the place to myself.

I'd recommend the Balmoral, but the costs will be significantly higher, I think.

Definitely do the Balmoral if you can get a good deal on price.

It will be cold (-5 degrees at night, and rising not much above 5 degrees in the daytime) and damp and possibly sleety.

I've just come back from a 3 day birthday treat at the Balmoral (very generous boyfriend!) and I can highly recommend it. Obviously, it's not cheap, but you do get excellent service, a fantastic underground swimming pool and gym, and the best location in Edinburgh. Check laterooms.com for some reasonable deals on Balmoral --go for a Superior room rather than a Standard.
Even if it's cold that time of year, you'll have a warm welcome at the Balmoral!
