Edinburgh in March
 

Hey guys new to the forum here! My boyfriend and I will be in Scotland between March 23 - 27 and are looking for suggestions on what to do in Edinburgh! My original plan was to go to Glasgow and make a trip to Fort Williams, however, the weather may not be ideal so I figured Edinburgh is more of a safe bet in order to enjoy our stay! We are open to any suggestions as to what to do from those who know Edinburgh like the back of their hands! We definitely want to check out some beautiful scenic views of the countryside near Edinburgh as well as check out awesome pubs in the city. So far the only thing on our itinerary is King Arthur's Seat as well as Edinburgh Castle...so any other suggestions would be extremely helpful! Also, how was Edinburgh in March this year? I've read almost everywhere that the weather is a hit or miss...sometimes it's raining other times the sun is out...if anyone can give me a breakdown of how March was for Edinburgh I would greatly appreciate it! Thank you in advance!

best to write down a list of possibilities of things to do and do whatever you feel is suitable for the weather that day.

Are you in Edinburgh March 23-27? Is that inclusive or exclusive of your arrival/departure days? I see no reason why you couldn't go to Glasgow for 2 days or Fort William -- it's not like you will be stuck in Edinburgh.

I'd maybe plan on Edinburgh AND Glasgow. There is a ton to see/do in both cities no matter the weather. (Ft William - the town - is no great shakes BTW -- but there is great scenery in the general area)

If you did venture outside of Edinburgh or Glasgow - how did you plan on getting around? Public transport or renting a car?

As for weather you could literally have anything (except hot).

For a terrific day trip from Edinburgh, you could take the train to North Berwick and visit Tantallon Castle (walkable from the town center or a short bus ride).

Or now that the Borders rail line has opened -- a good day trip or better yet overnight from Edinburgh would be to Galahiels and visit Melrose and Dryburgh.

Thanks for all the suggestions! We will be making our way around Scotland via public transportation...we also wanted to include the Highlands in our itinerary and I've done research on day trips that leave from Edinburgh. Two of the main companies I'm interested in are Rabbie's and TimberBush...have you guys any idea if one day tours to the Highlands are well worth it?

I was going to suggest those two companies in my first post but got interrupted and left it out. Both are VERY good. They offer very similar itineraries.

Honestly between the two -- probably Rabbies <i>slightly</i> on top . . . but not much difference.

The tours are totally 'worth it'. If you can squeeze in an overnight tour, even better.

Thank you JanisJ! I've decided to do Rabbie's 12 hour tour (Glencoe, Loch Ness, and Highlands). I was very weary when I read it was 12 hours but every review I've read states that 12 hours was well worth it based on the views and the very informative tour guides!

It will be a small group - absolute max 16 but often fewer and they stop often.
