Edinburgh hotels

Hello Everyone,
We're traveling to Edinburgh for the first time and looking for good, reasonably priced, hotel options. We'd like to be close to the Old Town, but open to recommendations. We'll be traveling during the second week of July. Thanks so much!

'Reasonably priced' could mean anything. What is your actual budget?

Malmaison on St Andrews Square https://www.malmaison.com/locations/edinburgh-city/

In July the Malmaison will run a bit over £400 per night -- if the OP considers that reasonable, then that is a fine property.

We enjoyed the Ibis Hotel on St. Andrews Square. Excellent location. We walked everywhere. Close to sights and restaurants. They have a nice breakfast buffet that's included with the rate.

I recently searched for hotels in Edinburgh for my granddaughter and her friend. There are two 3-star Premier Inns in the city center:
  • Premier Inn Edinburgh City Centre Royal Mile hotel,
  • Premier Inn Edinburgh City Centre (Waverley) hotel.
Additionally, there are two 3-star Motel Ones:
  • Motel One Edinburgh Royal,
  • Motel One Edinburgh Princes
Be sure to examine their room sizes carefully, as I know Motel One typically offers smaller rooms.

Thank you all. I have a better understanding of the prices. We didn't want to spend over $300 a night so Old Town might not be the best option. We're probably going to be renting a car, can you guys tell me of other safe areas were we can lodge that's not too far from the city center I guess? It can be a hotel, bed and breakfast would be lovely or an aparthotel. Thanks again!

lina_185, is Edinburgh your first stop on your vacation? It was the first stop for us, so we didn't pick up our rental car until the day we left Edinburgh. In fact, we picked up the rental car at the airport because we thought that would be easier so that my husband wouldn't have to drive in Edinburgh.

Did you check out the Ibis Hotel at St. Andrews Square? When we stayed there in 2023, the rate was roughly $300 per night. Personally, I think it would be nicer to stay IN Edinburgh, not in the outskirts.

please don't drive within 24 hours of crossing the pond, the UK has very low road death rates and we would like to keep it that way.

I agree with Karen Woo. We also stayed at the Ibis Styles St Andrew’s Square in October 2023. Outstanding location with a plentiful breakfast buffet included. I joined the Accor Group when booking and got a discount. We walked to many fine restaurants as well as to the Royal Mile, took the tram to the Royal Yacht Britannia. Easy access to the train station as well as the Airport Bus. The tram also goes to the airport.

Edinburgh hotels are expensive - just are. Like almost London prices. And they have gone up considerably in the last 2 years. The Ibis recommended above is a fine property - but in mid-July it will be over your budget. Maybe $50-ish over if you pre-pay non-cancelable. But to have the ability to cancel/change a july booking the rates will be around $400 or a tad higher.

You do not want a car in Edinburgh -- but that isn't an issue almost anywhere in the city because the public transport is terrific. I don't know your exact dates (just sometime in the 2nd week of July) so the dummy bookings I plugged in could be a skosh higher or lower depending on the weekends etc.

If I were you - I'd plug my dates into Booking.com including any 'must have' features and price range and see what you get. Then if you see some possibilities -- maybe ask us here and we can check for any red flags location-wise.
