Edinburgh Hotel Suggestion
 

Hello fodorites...can someone please recommend a really nice hotel that is within walking distance to the Old High Street. I'm told there is a nice area with Georgian buildings down the big hill next to Princess Gardens? I've also heard Balmarol is a good choice but I'm not sure of it's location. Any suggestions would be most welcome...budget is approximately $400 or a little more.

would be my choice for the price you wish to pay. Both are on the west side of the New Town and are only a short walk to Princes Street and ten - fifteen minutes walk from the Royal Mile. There are also special offers ongoing at the Edinburgh Residence which include pampering etc.

The Balmoral in Princes Street may be deemed a better location but at the Edinburgh Residence you should get better and more personal attention. Princes Street it to be the subject of months of continuous roadworks for the new tram route so may be better to avoid this work.

One of the best located hotels is the SAS Radisson on the High Street but have heard poor reports about it lately and other reviews lately would appear to indicate that standards are slipping. http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Rev..._Scotland.html

I stayed at the Radisson last June and was quite satisfied. It's a great location, right in the middle of the Royal Mile. There are a number of good options in Edinburgh, but for the price range you are looking at, this should definitely be on your list.

The Balmoral is 250 meters from High Street - very close, IMO the perfect location for Edinburgh, just between Old Town and New Town.

At certain times, especially in summer, you can get good rates at the Balmoral.

We stayed there and we can recommend the hotel.

If I had the money I'd stay at the Balmoral or the Scotsman. I normally try to stay in a B&B w/i walking distance of Princes Street/Old town

I highly recommend the Chester Residence. We found it an easy walk to everything in Edinburgh. And probably one of the nicest places I've ever stayed.

Check the Howard Hotel. We had a great, large room (junior suite) with fireplace on the top floor. Free internet. Nice restaurant. Easy walk to the main sights. Feels more like a B&B than a hotel. I'd stay there again!

If I were visiting as a tourist and had the money, I'd probably go for the Balmoral (note spelling) as it is the most central location for everything you're likely to want to do. It is a traditionl-style grand hotel with a nice cocktail bar and a basement pool (albeit not very big). (I wouldn't recommend eating anything other than breakfast there, however.) You should be able to get it for your budget, assuming you are not coming on a rugby weekend or something. When are you coming ?

I suggest you look at a guidebook with a map of Edinburgh to get an idea of the layout. (And wanting to be helpful rather than rude, you'll find it easier to research places if you get the spelling right !) Princes Street (not Princess Street) is the main throughfare of the city centre, running east to west and separating the Old Town (which is the mediaeval part, to the south) and the New Town (which is the Georgian part, to the north). The Royal Mile, of which the High Street (not the Old High Street) forms a part, is the main thoroughfare through the Old Town, from the Castle at the west end downhill to the Palace at the east end. Princes Street Gardens lies to the south of most of Princes Street, between it and the Castle. The Balmoral is at the east end of Princes Street.
