Edinburgh hotel near sailing cruise port

We are taking a Windstar Scandinavia cruise next July which leaves from Edinburgh, Scotland. Can you suggest a moderate budget hotel for our 1 day to tour around before boarding the boat. We are a very fit couple in our 70's. Thank you.

First of all -- what do you consider 'moderate? What is your actual budget.

Also IMO there is no real reason to stay neat the ship - Edinburgh is an easy city for public transport/taxis. I'd stay somewhere in the middle of town - like on the Royal Mile.

Where does the cruise run from? There are at least 3 places used for cruises from Edinburgh

Thanks for you replies--our budget is around $200 and appreciate the suggestion to stay right in the midst of things. The port name is not indicated in our info to date--I'll have to check that out. Thanks again.

$200 = approx £130

Is the cruise in early/mid or in late July? That will make a very big difference. The end of July gets VERY crowded/busy/high room rates w/ the early arrivals for the Fringe/International Festival/Tattoo -- which all start the first week in August. If you are there before the last week in July then you should be able to find a place in the very center of town w/i your budget. But if in the last week - that will be a lot harder.

Maybe look at some of the travelodges (there are several) - early in July they will be well far below your budget, but at the very end of the month they will be over.

Your ship sails from Leith on 12th July, I think. There are two "budget" hotels down there- the Premier Inn and the Express by Holiday Inn. Malmaison- mid market- is just round the corner. It depends, I think, when you board. If early morning, the Leith option is good. If later in the day, then town centre makes more sense. Mal's little sister, the Hotel du Vin, can be a good choice. There are, otherwise, Travel Lodges, Premier Inns and Express by Holiday inn all over the place.

On my own shilling, I often choose the Apex in the Grassmarket.

Oh -- good, if it is the early July sailing your choices will be much better/easier.

Sheila makes a good point -- if the ship sails in the AM then staying in Leith makes sense. but if it is after about 10 or 11AM through the afternoon I'd stay in Old Town.
