Edinburgh Day Trips; Early November
We are two active adults who will be in Edinburgh five days early November. We would like to take one or two day trips by train, do you have any suggestions? Thank you,

1) Stirling -- easy train ride and the Castle is magnificent
2) St Andrews. Train to Leuchars then local bus to St Andrews.
3) Dundee - about 1 hour by train. Discovery Centre, and the brand new V&A Dundee both just next door to the train station

4) Borders Abbeys - new train line lets you get to them in an hour or so - buses once there - Melrose, Jedburgh, Dryhburg (sp?) - I did all one day as day trip from Berwick-on-Tweed -farther timewise than Edinburgh. 3 old lovely abbeys in a nice pastoral area along the Scottish-English border. Could take tour from Ednburgh too.

Meant to add that the Borders Abbeys area is not as easy as janis' neat day trips because you do have to take short bus hops around - no real problem but not a straight shot as others but if like nice rambles footpaths between say Melrose and Dryburgh or Jedburgh to Dryburgh along Tweed River. Dryburgh is in an especially bucolic situation. But this day trip would be good for folks who want some easy walks or on a bus tour.

I didn't mention the Borders because they are much easier to tour by car - the train line is fine but once in Galashiels or Tweedbank, getting around by local buses is difficult. Most of the routes run frequently just during the early morning and late afternoon school runs, otherwise they are generally every 2 hours.

Geesh, I was hoping all the Da Vinci Code fans had already visited Rosslyn Chapel leaving it to those who don't need all that historical stuff and nonsense. It is easy to get to by bus and would make a nice half day visit.
You mentioned day trips by train so have no idea if you'd be interested in one of Rabbies day trips but will suggest them as a option. They use a 16 passenger bus, and I would suspect that in November you'd be part of a much smaller group perhaps just yourselves plus driver/guide. Once scheduled they go regardless of number of passengers. They offer a number of day trips from Edinburgh. The driver/guides are excellent filling you in on the history, culture and geography of the places you visit and pass through. This is one reason I prefer traveling with them over doing it on my own. I've done over a half dozen tours with them including two day trips and can highly recommend them. Have a look. www.rabbies.com

. . . if you mean more of Fife besides St Andrews - including Crail, Anstruther, Pittenweem and the other fishing villages, Falkland Palace, etc. - you'd either want to rent a car or take a group tour. Not really doable by public transport.
This tour hits the high points https://www.rabbies.com/en/scotland-...-fife-day-tour

It’ll be dark by half four, and probably wet at some point, so if it were me I’d be sticking to large towns and cities to maximise indoor stuff like museums, galleries, pre-Xmas shopping, good cafes and bars.
