Edinburgh Day tours

Hello.

Will be spending one week in Edinburgh in September. Looking for 1-2 day trips. Anyone have any suggestions or preferences? I looked into the Hairy Coo and looks fun. Can be anywhere to see anything. Already rented an apartment in Edinburgh for that week. And should we book in advance or just as easy to book once we get there? Thanks!

Sorry forgot to mention we do not have a car, so will be looking at tours or public transport.

Two really good companies that do small group day trips and longer tours are Rabbies and timberbush.

Thanks I did look into those. I was wondering if anyone took any Day Tours from Edinburgh and would they recommend it. I've seen some that go up to the highlands and some whiskey tours.

We spent 5 days in Edinburgh last July and did two day tours, one to Stirling and the other to St. Andrews and the Fife fishing villages. We took the train on the first tour, going first to Stirling and then getting off at Linlithgow on the return, it's on the same route. The second tour was with Hairy Coo, we were considering Rabbies but decided on HC since a whiskey tour was part of the deal. We were extremely happy with both the guide and the tour, though I have heard only good things about Rabbies. Hope this helps, enjoy your stay:)

One tip - don't go too far. You don't need to go to Loch Ness or Inverness to see the Highlands

The best tour we have had, maybe ever, was a tour with Grant Wilson, a police officer who is studying for his guide's license for his retirement occupation.

Our focus was the Edinburgh crime novels of Ian Rankin, but there has been a lot of crime in Edinburgh (not to tourists!) over the years, and he is knowledgeable about it all.

We met him by accident and had a great time. He is a great storyteller and knows the city like the back of your hand. How good a storyteller? He was recently asked to be on the same program with Rankin himself at a testimonial dinner.

He was also a famous Rugby player (an International) in his youth and can do a sports tour if asked.

You can reach him at <[email protected]>

We took the HC trip around the highlands and really enjoyed it. Our driver was outstanding and the best thing was we didn't pay until after the trip and were thoroughly happy with it all.

Thanks. I decided to do the HC highlands and booked it. I think I'll "wing" the rest when I get there.
