I would agree with Caroline that Salamander Street is not the area to be staying when in Edinburgh.
There are a number of apartments in the city centre which would enable you to walk / explore the city centre and you do not have to continually get buses back and forward to your accommodation.
Depending on what time of year you intend coming to Edinburgh but there are apartments available at very reasonable rates.
Have a look at the Apartment By Castle which has two bedrooms and gets good reviews. It apparently costs less the longer you stay.

Also the City Apartment in Parliament Square www.edinburghcastle.biz/acc_hotels_self.html
The West Bow Apartment has I think already been mentioned by the greendragon but the web address I have for it is www.aboutscotland.co.uk/edin/westbow112.html but this could be that they advertise on various websites. That is basically two apartments so the smaller (Upper) one which sleeps four may be of interest to you.

Thanks Caroline, did not realise it was August, which will be an exceptionally busy time.
The University Campus should have something but I have heard that they can be expensive for box type accommodation but at that time of year getting anywhere reasonable for such a length of time could be difficult. South Grey Street could also be boxy as it is modern apartments but in a nice out of town area.
I think that there are self catering apartments in the new build buildings in Spring Gardens, Royal Park Terrace /Clockmill Lane but I am unsure as to their actual website. It is only a short walk away from Holyrood if you go across Holyrood Park at the back of Holyrood Palace. www.woodcroftapartments.co.uk show that they have apartment in that area but that name does not seem familiar and the same apartments appear available at lower prices on www.latelet.com/rentals/24847.html
