Edinburgh

Looking for recommendations for a hotel in Edinburgh during the festival in August. We would prefer to be in walking distance to the main sites...the castle, royal mile etc. 3-4 star hotel. Thank you

Tripadvisor.com or hotels.com - don't delay.

"We would prefer to be in walking distance to the main sites..." So would 200,000 other people.

If you want something moderately priced you could try the Apex International or Apex City. But I'd not wait for a great recommendation, I'd just book something ASAP.

What sort of standard/price are you looking for ? For a moderately priced option I recommend the Ibis (http://www.accorhotels.com/accorhote...he_hotel.shtml). It's part of a French chain : I haven't stayed in the Edinburgh one, but I've stayed in others & although the rooms are simple they've always been adequately equipped and very clean. The Edinburgh one is on Hunter Square right next to the part of the Royal Mile which is closed to traffic & given over to street performers. It might be a bit noisy (you could try asking for a room on a higher floor) but other than that I'd say is perfectly placed. It's currently showing as £74.95 per room per night for August.

How long are you planning to stay ? Bear in mind that most establishments will have a minimum booking period.

If you are looking for any other type of hotel, e.g. abject luxury, just say & I'll recommend some more options :-)

Sheila, I think the Crowne Plaza has changed its name yet again and is now a Radisson. Good recommendation, though, location-wise. I've never seen inside, have you ?

Sorry Michele, I'd failed to notice you specified 3-4 star. The Ibis is more of a 2 star.

I've stayed in the Scandic Crown three times I think. It's a typical chain type hotel but agreat location and the public rooms are nice.

No wonder I can never get the number from directory inquiries.....

Michele,

From what I've heard about the August festival, I think you'd be lucky to get anything at this point so if the Ibis has a room available, take it even if it isn't 4 star. I've stayed there twice (not at festival time though) and it's perfectly adequate, reasonably priced and youuo simpley can't beat the location right on the Royal Mile. Also the Radisson (formerly Crowne Plaza) is just down the street but costs twice as much.) Good luck!

I doubt if you can get it now, but try the Castleview Guest House. The location is tough to beat, the people are really nice, and the breakfast is fabulous.

mr_go: I was going to recommend Castle View too - but figured it probably is already booked up for the run of the Festival/Tattoo.

Suggest you look at The Scotsman on North Bridge - just a few paces off the Royal Mile. Very convenient to the castle, etc. We've reserved there for four days later this year, and from all I can see, it is superb. Their number 1-800-745-8883. GBP 250 per night, all taxes included.
