Eden Project Cornwall

Has anyone visited this place? Is it worth a trip?

Simone Jan 9th, 2002 06:53 PM

No. I visited the Eden Project while on a fabulous garden tour of Cornwall and Devon. EP consisted of an educational/visitors' center and two very large geodesic domes. If you like plants under glass, you might like it. If you like plants in gardens, with interesting architecture or lovely houses, you won't.

I have never been but hope to visit soon. There are several websites if you do a search but their own one is www.edenproject.com and I find it fascinating. There is a huge outdoor area - 30 acres - which is still under development, but there is enough interest to make me feel it is worthwhile.

If you've ever been to the Floriade in the Netherlands I guess it is somewhat similar.

I'm sorry you didn't like it Simone. I'm not a gardener, and wouldn't normally visit gardens but I found it fascinating. The structure alone is a major feat of engineering, and thought the walks through the tropical dome really absorbing.

I had heard it gets very busy, but went on a bank holiday on a gloroiously sunny day and it was blissfully empty - everyone else was clearly at the beach.

I agree with Kate - we went last summer and found it very interesting - again, more from a structural and educational point of view than as a "beautiful garden" (of which there are many examples in the UK). The outdoor areas mostly had rather small plants, as they were only planted recently, but these should improve in later years.

Echoing Kate's caveat - we visited before the school summer holiday period (late July to early Sept) - apparently there were enormous queues esp. on wet days during this time. Also traffic jams in surrounding roads.
