edam and gouda cheese purchases
I was told not to buy these cheeses at the airport since they are very expensive. Any suggestions on where to buy it to take home and approximate cost. Thanks for any help and suggestions you can give me.

What about any given supermarket in the area where these cheese sorts are produced?

You can also get them shipped home from some of the "touristy" places like Volendam and Marken. My son and I are big cheese lovers and we bring it back on every trip. We usually stock up on cheese, Droste chocolates and beer at a grocery store the night before we leave. But, IMHO it just might be less of a hassle to buy it back home. You don't save that much plus it can add a lot of weight to your bags.

"<i>approximate cost</i>" is nearly impossible to answer. Sort of like asking how much does wine cost. Different makers, different sizes, etc makes a lot of difference. But except for a bit to eat on the flight or for a day or two, I probably wouldn't bother.
Between good markets/import stores in the States, and internet sites like igourmet.com you can get it just about as cheaply at home. |
Theose are standard and very cheap in any european grocery store. The cheapest cheese you can buy ;-) under 5€ per kilo.

Zeus: ARe you still allowed to bring home the cheese. I think we might look for a supermarket and buy the gouda and edam cheese there. I checked on the places we arevisiting for Edam cheese and they wanted $26.00. I thought that included shipping and they said no. Thanks everyone. any other tips would be appreciated.

I have no idea whether you can bring cheese home or not, but if I wanted some, I'd head for Albert Cuypmarkt in Amsterdam. All kinds of wonderful cheeses and fruits and their prices were generally better than the supermarkets. We got cheese and berries for breakfasts (along with Greek yogurt from a nearby market) there last year. In fact, we're headed back to A-dam Mon. and Tues. afternoon we'll walk off our jet lag at Albert Cuypmarkt.

Hi I,
Yes, you can bring home Edam and Gouda. Some shops will vacuum seal them for you. ((I)) |
