Eating near the Quai Voltaire Hotel.
 

My husband and I will be in Paris for three quick nights. We prefer small places to eat, maybe even places to get cheese, a bottle of wine, casual, inexpensive, etc. Any recommendations for breakfast, lunch or dinner near our hotel? Thank you!

Your hotel is close to rue de Lille. I recommend the Bistrot de Paris at 33 rue de Lille. It isn't expensive, decor is nice, and the menu is traditional.

There a fabulous place just west at rue de Bac called Le Fregate. Gorgeous inside, cozy and intimate. Extensive menu. Prix fixe one of the best bargains in Paris (French standards/comfort food). Great place anytime for sandwiches, salads, beverages. Fabulous onion soup. Lovely terrace outside with views across the river to the Louvre and Jardins des Tuileries. Wherever we stay in Paris we always have a nearby spot to start (with coffee)/end (with a nightcap) the day, grab an inexpensive meal, or enjoy just a salad or sandwich or coffee and dessert...And, this place is just wonderful for all that.

Be sure to check out the bookinistes across the street, along with the street art along the quai toward the entrance to Musee d'Orsay. I picked up some absolutely spendid watercolors (cheap) on our last visit. In fact, after a look on the way by, I jumped up from my seat at Le Fregate and went back after them, and was ever so glad to have done that.

Also highly, highly, recommend Le Caleche (8 rue de Lille), Les Ministeres (on rue de Bac just south of Universitie), Le Telegraphe (41 rue de Lille - gorgeous! pricey but worth it, see www.reservethebest.com).

The closest place to eat would be at number 27 quai Voltaire, Le Voltaire.

Dark, (smokey when I was there) and typical bistro food..I remember liking it but not what we ate- this was years ago.
So that is an idea.
You are very close to so many Left Bank bistros, you will have no problem finding something to your liking..

I have the Hotels of Charm and Character in Paris book, I think this is their online version of the Quai Voltaire review.
At least you can look at the pics though and see what the rooms are like. By the map you can see how close you are to Blvd St Germain, rue de Bac, rue Sts Peres, there are cafes and bistros everywhere..on rue Jacob are small patisseries and a place to buy wine.
The Petit St Benoit is on rue Benoit, between rue Jacob and Blvd St Germain, neighborhood bistro, really comfortable, good food and not at all touristy.

I think the Reservethebest.com site shows menus and most of them also display a price.

To me, a 'modest' meal would be (for example) a prix-fixe menu between 20-30€, or a brasserie meal, one course/plat + wine for around 15-20€.

Cheaper but good meals can be found at good Asian 'traiteurs' (delis), or create your own picnic (in the room if it's cold out).

Good suggestions above..La Caleche, Bistrot de Paris, Petit St Benoit...Le Telegraphe is really too expensive to be considered and not casual!

Also try Bistrot de Breteuil ..33 Euro per person , aperitif,3 courses and half bottle of good wine..you choose. It is walkable even for oldie like me from your hotel. There is also a nice cafe just down the quai from you , going toward the Eiffel Tower..We always have at least 1 lunch there on our trips but I can't ever remember the name..it's just past the D'Orsay

Our favorite in that area is Chez Fernand on rue Christine..maybe a 15 minute walk from your hotel. Check it out on www.reserverethebest.com. It should be under 80Euro for dinner with a bottle of good wine.

BTW..we always walk to PAUL on rue de Seine and rue du BAc for brekfast. It's maybe less than a 10 minute alk from your hotel..for under 4 Euro, you have your choice of a grand cafe,chocolat,or tea and a flute or pastry..They also do larger breakfast but when in Paris , I do as Paris does!

On the corner of rue Jacob and rue Sts Peres, there is a small cafe where they will make you a breakfast with eggs etc if you want to do something more American. I find eggs in Paris to be so tasty, I like having a late breakfast/early lunch at any cafe ( Deux Magots is good) of omelets and hot chocolate..
Deux Magots is also good for late night drinks..a spot to sit and people watch while sipping a nightcap..

I don't know the name of that cafe..but when we are in Paris , I go there every morning at 7 or a few minutes before..if you are talking about the one across the rue de st Peres..there is one on each corner. The man there..he might be the owner...always recognizes me..ah..le femme de Florida! I have my coffee with the regulars and he and I sort of chat in fractured French then I go and get the DH out of bed!The nearer cafe is also very nice but we mainly go there when we come back to the hotel and sit and have un verre de rouge before hitting the bed for a late afternoon nap!

I think the one on the other side is the L'Esperance.

May we have more suggestions. Is the Voltaire expensive?

Scarlett, is that cafe on the corner of Rue Jacob? I think it's called Le Comptoir des Saints Peres.

The one right next door to the danube is Le Comptoir des Saints Peres and L'Esperance is a bit further along rue d L'Universite ( Rue Jacob changes names at r. des St Peres. ), the one I'm talking about is just across the street from Le comptoir on the opposite corner, across from the Post office
