eating near Paddington, London
 

We have a place to stay in London near the Paddington railway station .
We know there are many places in London to go for a meal, but would welcome any suggestions for a bite in the area (without taking public transport) or up to half hour walking distance.

This is a very, very, far cry from being the gastronomic centre of London, and I really would urge you to get on a bus or tube and eat somewhere else

There are loads of OKish places round the station. THe only ones ever eat at are
- Mawar, on the north side of junction of Edgware Rd and Sussex Gardens. EXcellent value set Malaysian lunches: good, less cheap dinners. Lots of female fellow-diners wear veils these days: don't let that put you off.
- Mandalay, a fair walk up Edgware Rd, just beyond Boscobel St. Burmese, owned and operated by a chap who looks like Buddha who'll give you his extraordunary life history
- Patogh, on the south side of Crawford Place, the other side of Edgware Rd from Paddington. Really excellent Persian kebabs, with huge, fresh, salads and fantastic sesame bread.
- Kandoo, beyond Mandalay. Persan stews.
- Maroush at the bottom end of Edgware Rd getting on for Marble Arch tube. Probably the best of the million or so Lebanese places along this stretch

Otherwise: you have to walk fast to get to Soho in 30 mins, but I'd push it to 4 and eat there.

Well, London is the crap restaurant capital of the world. There's loads of restaurants everywhere: there just aren't that many good ones.

It's 20 mins to Queensway. Royal China does triff dim sum (but heroic queues weekend luinchtimes: get there by 12)

Geales off NHG at the 30 min end really is getting pricey for a chippy, but it's not let me down. Costas in Hillgate St is your classic comforting London Greek.
Clarkes and Kensington Place along Ken Church St are serious, both as eateries and as wallet-denters.

Nyonya in Pembridge Rd does some nonya food, though not as much as it should. More geared to ordinary bumiputra Malaysian.

We stayed in Soho 2 years ago and had some not so good food there. Eating anywhere is iffy , even in pricey restaurant in NY and Paris.

Paddington area is so dreary for London. So dreary.

Some REALLY put the Paddington area down and I think that is a little extreme. We have a favorite patisserie that we have had some nice lunches at and of course pastries. I enjoy the ethnicity of it, extremely varied and obviously as some of YOU might be saying that of course I DO NOT GO TO London for gastronomical DELIGHTS but for LONDON itself. Have a good one. People can EAT just anywhere. Byeee Halfpint

we are staying in a nice apt. in Paddington for 2 weeks for FREE.
I don't care how uninteresting the area is :the tube is right there, the train to Bath is right there and several thousand dollars we would have to spend on hotels are in my pocket !

Well, as you MAY have figured out from my earlier post, I actually enjoy Bayswater area as it seems like where REAL people live and so many different cultures around, grocery stories and just REAL and very handy to everywhere in London, via the tube. I am SURE you will enjoy it. Halfpint.

I have visited London 5-6 times staying in different parts each time.
I am sure there will be a good pub we can have a pint in right in Paddington !

I love Bayswater area !! I don't know if Paddington and the area around Hilton Metropole is just the same, but for what I saw in photographs..I would like it too :)

We had dinner our first night at the Prince Edward just south of Princes Square; good beer and food.

I agree that Paddington is dreary, but that free apartment puts a shine on the old sneaker. Westbourne Grove has good eats, and the Fresh&Wild is there, I think that's a good bet some of the time within walking distance. Or go ahead and take the tube to Notting Hill Gate, there's Tesco, Marks@Spencer, many eats,, and several cinemas. http://www.streetsensation.co.uk
