Eating in Rome, Florence, Venice
 

We would appreciate suggestions for restaurants in these cities. Economical, causal with table service. We will be staying centrally located in each of these cities and will be walking to the restaurant.

Water, water everywhere and not a drop to drink...

There are LOTS of reviews and lists of places to eat in Italy. HOWEVER, its too much info to process and a lot of it is confusing (extreme differing opinions) and at best subjective (if not down right wrong) or maybe posted by someone connected to the restaurant to increase biz.
I too want a simple couple of names of places to eat that are causal, economical and worth the money.

I second Tim&Liz's suggestion. Great recommendation!

And if I were to give you the names of my favorite trattorias in Rome, Florence and Venice, how would you know that my opinion is not a) at best subjective (if not down right wrong) or b) posted by someone connected to the restaurant?

Trust me - you don't need any recommendations. There are so many wonderful restaurants to walk to all over.
The menus are all posted outside so it is easy to be sure that something will appeal to you, and I can honestly say that throughout our 2 weeks in Italy last summer, neither my husband nor I, nor our 3 kids, had a single bad meal!

How is any restaurant review <b>not</b> subjective?

My opionion is when you get to each city and are walking around Anonymous check out the various restaurants..the looks of it, the aromas, the menu which is probably in the window etc. Make a reservation for the one you like if you want to go there for dinner or if for lunch just see if they have a table avaialable.

That is what I have always done in Italy and I have never been dissapointed. The only horrible dinner I have ever had in Italy was recommended by a person who had just returned from Italy and raved about the restaurant. The food was horrible and the service was worse. Did we go on a &quot;bad&quot; night, I don't know but it was interesting how each person's conception of a great restaurant can vary.

But yes there are hundreds or perhaps thousands of restaurant reviews from Fodorite's regarding restaurants in Italy.

I have to agree with Zerlina's and Tim_and_Liz's comments.

Wishing you a wonderful time in Italy and I am sure you will eat lots of wonderful food and drink splendid Italian wine. And don't forget to have a gelato daily.

If the menu displayed is a Menu turistico skip that place. You will get meals that are not as good but are what the proprietor thinks tourists want, which may not be what you want.

My wife and I leave for Italy this Sunday. This will be our third trip to Italy, and we are traveling with another couple. My wife and I check out restaurants while we explore each city we are in. If the waiter is outside we ask to see menus, and the restaurant. They are happy to show off their restaurant. While inside we get to smell the excellent food cooking. NOTE: We never eat at the large squares. We find the restaurants where the locals eat. It use to be easy. The restaurant where most of the people are smoking. It's been three years since our last visit and I've heard that smoking is not allowed in the restaurants any more. It's part of the fun of exploreing to find your own special place to eat. Also, ask your hotel what restaurants that they would recommend. Most of all enjoy your trip. Louie.
