Eating at Versailles
 

Going to Versailles on Saturday October 13 and wondering what food options I will have there. In the summer there's a little food stand by the Grand Canal but I noticed it wasn't open in April so it may be closed in October too. Couldn't find answer on Versaille's website. So i'm thinking of bringing a sandwich in my purse but I'm wondering if it will be confiscated going through security at the palace. Has anyone tried to picnic at Versailles and had any problems?

Near the Grand Canal there are places to eat. Funny...We were there in August, and couldnt find the food stand too, we ended up eating lunch in a local restaurant 50m out an access gate near Neptune Lake

They will not confiscate a single sandwich in a purse,, and you could pack a picnic and simply put it in the bag check. The only liquid permitted is a bottle of water.

You could also eat in town. There are lots of places. The weather in October might be fine but it might also be so terrible that you will chuck any idea of eating a sandwich in the gardens.

I don't think the French would confiscate food anywhere (except going into cinemas). When Disneyland Paris opened, they realised within the first month that they could not prevent the French (and other Europeans) from bringing their own meals into the park. They very quickly organised a picnic area. Bringing your own meal wherever you go in Europe is considered to be a basic human right.

funny, in March there were plenty of places near the grand canal - a hot potato stall, one selling drinks and funny waffle things, and a proper restaurant.

further on near the grand trianon we found another hot potato stall and for less than €10 were able to have a large potato each and a drink. there is also a cafe down by the petit trianon with inside and outside seats.

up by the main palace there is a cafe where i was able to spend a vast amount of money on a mug of hot water and a tea bag, but the food looked rather better value. but if I were there and wanting a proper meal, I'd definitely find somewhere in the town.
