Eating and Shopping in Cologne
I need some quick tips on where to get a nice dinner (moderate) and where the best shopping area is in Cologne. We are staying near the Cathedral. (I love German food and beer)

Shopping area (pedestrian zone) starts right at the Cathedral:
Walk south to Hohe Str. / turn west on Schildergasse: department stores, chain stores like H&M, Zara, etc. (also in neighboring streets)
From Schildergasse go further west, across Neumarkt square (more department stores) to Mittelstr. (and neighboring streets): upscale designer brand stores.
From Mittelstr. go north to Ehrenstr.: fashion & more stores with a bit more younger, edgy attitude
Electronic goods and similar in department stores or at Saturn, a megastore for that kind of stuff at Hansaring (1 S-Bahn stop from Central Station), near the Hansaring S-Bahn station.

For many years, I have enjoyed the food at almost every "Wirtschaft" (pub) in Koeln that we've been into.
(DH was born there)
Not expensive, tasty and great atmosphere. We do speak German though.
The potatoes (Salzkartoffeln) are delicious, as are Schnitzel and salads. ( Unfortunately, Salzkartoffeln are increasingly replaced by "Pomme Frites".) I love Sauerbraten and Sauerkraut too.
I'd suggest a walk across the railway bridge from the Dom, turn right down the steps and walk along the Rhine a longish block to the next bridge.(Deutzer Bruecke) Cross the very wide Siegburger Str. to the "Freiheit" in Deutz, and go into any Wirtshaft there, for an un-touristy meal.
Walk back over the Deutzer Bridge. See you there!
