Easyjet has changed the rules re size of carry-on baggage

From 2 July, it will offer 'guaranteed' allowance of 50cm x 40cm x 20cm

Anyone travelling after July 2 with a cabin bag bigger than the upper limit of 56x45x25 will have to pay £25 to put their bag in at the check-in. This increases to £40, per bag, at the gate.

This may affact those of you that travel from the US: your carry-on may be accepted in the US, but you may have to check the case in for an Easyjet flight.

My initial reaction was never to believe anything you read in the Daily Mail, but I think you (and most of the people commenting on the paper's website) have misinterpreted the new rule.

Easyjet's problem is that if the plane is full (and most are), there is not enough room for everyone's carry-on. They therefore have to put some of it in the hold - at no charge to the passenger.

The new rule means that if your bags are the maximum size allowed, they may have to be placed in the hold. However, if your bags are to the lower dimensions, then Easyjet guarantee that you will be able to keep them with you. Valuable and fragile items, and those you might need during the flight, are therefore best packed in a smaller bag.

There is no additional cost to the passenger, and it is the cabin staff who make the decision on what goes in the hold depending on how full the flight is, and how much baggage is brought on.
