EasyJet Announces New Weight & Size Requirements
I just got an email notification from EasyJet that new carryon weight and size requirements will apply beginning July 12th. I couldn't find it on their website yet, so here is what it said:
"easyJet today announces another pioneering development by introducing Europe's most generous hand baggage allowance. It will be better than that offered by any other airline in Europe - even the Club Class allowances of the dinosaur national airlines! From Monday 12 July 2004 easyJet is removing the weight restriction on hand baggage for all passengers. The only stipulation is that you must be able to lift your bag safely into the overhead lockers yourself without assistance (or giving yourself a hernia!), so the weight must be within reason. In order to comply with safety regulations of the UK Civil Aviation Authority, and to reflect the limited space in the overhead storage bins, there will be a size limit, which means that your bag must not be bigger than 55x40x20 cm - but this is 40% bigger than the current allowance! Our fantastic new hand baggage rules will give passengers the freedom to carry more than they can on the Club Class of traditional airlines - but without the extortionate fares! This new allowance will be particularly attractive to easyJet's many business passengers who already fly with Europe's number one low-cost airline, benefiting from conveniently located city airports (not airstrips miles away), 30 minute check-in times, high-frequency routes, great punctuality, and some of Europe's lowest fares!" |
This is great news! Thanks for sharing it.
I may be able to do carryon only now for my July trip on the Easyjet portions. This limit may have changed since Ryanair recently changed to allowing 10 kg of carryon luggage (not sure what date that is effective). |
Fabulous news. Let's hope other carriers follow suit!

Bugger Easyjet...I was 8 days without my luggage because of them....

I have received the same e-mail news letter. The news is on their web site now.

So this presumably means people will be lugging even bigger bags and cases on board the plane than they already do now?
This just seems to hold up the boarding process with it taking people longer to get in their seats and ready to go. |
I believe easyjet is also reducing its check-in allowance at the same time.
|
Does this mean a 20 inch case will fit in the bin??
|
Yes. 1 inch = 2.54 cm.
So 55 cm = 21.7 inches. |
Sound good to me. Using Easy Jet from Italy to Paris then Air France to US.
Guess that will help the Italian economy because My wife will be able to shop a lot more. Thanks for doing the math. |
good to hear! I always use carry-on to and from europe, but flying EasyJet throughout Europe I dislike having to check my bags. The weight restriction was really low--i think 9 or 12 pounds. So this is good news indeed.

Ann41,
Where did you see info on a change in the checked in baggage rules? I looked at the website link, and I don't see it. Thanls. |
