just beginning to plan trip as above. as usual in planning am pouring over this site. still confused about best way to get there. seems like flying to london and then finding budget flight might be best. any ideas? no fixed itin. yet and will have about 3 weeks. also wondering if it is already too late to plan a trip for late september, early october (appears to be a popular time). any help appreciated.

With the amount of time you have, searching the low cost carriers is your best bet. I would build in an overnight in London or wherever though, as you often have to change airports.
If you want to get straight there, I've had good luck with www.croatiatravel.com, from east coast though. Flights to Zagreb seem to be cheapest.

It might be cheapest to go from Vancouver to the UK, using one of the several budget carriers now available. I'm not sure this qualifies as "easiest", though.

It's quite possible you could get an airfare from Vancouver to London roundtrip for less than $600 USD using one of these. And no, it's not too late to book your trip.

Going to Germany first is also a reasonable plan, on whatever airline works best. Continental often has good deals, although you have to go through Newark (or possibly Houston) so I can't say it's the easiest way either.

And for budget airlines:

Overland by train might be an option. Look for the man in seat 61 web site (I don't know the full URL).

I'm flying from Seattle to Croatia Oct. 1. I got my tickets through www.smartfares.com. I fly Seattle, Amsterdam, Zagreb, Dubrovik and same coming back. The fare was $1,110.00. NWA and Croatia Air. I flew there last year with a stop in Paris and then Europebyair to Dubrovnik, but it worked out to be more $$ than this year.

Barb: Does NWA partner with Croatia Air now? Or did you book that part yourself from AMS?

Holly - actually it was all booked through smartfares.com. NWA is not partnered with Croatia Air, but I will be able to check through to Dubrovnik from Seattle, which is great. I had thought about BA with a layover in London, but by the time I got back and forth to the airport and a hotel, etc., this is much cheaper and quicker. My connection times are great too. A few hours at Schipol, which I don't mind!! I love that airport.

We flew BA last year and their prices were the best I found at the time. We flew STL to London Heathrow, had to stay the night in London (darn), and London Gatwick to Dubrovnik. Same thing for the return. My price was about $700 per person, but I haven't seen it that cheap since then so I think a budget carrier may be the way to go.

Hi Cindy,

I would check www.farecompare.com first to see what city is cheapest to fly into, and then www.whichbudget.com to see if there are low fare carriers to Croatia from there.

I know some friends are flying into Zurich from PDX in Sept and got their tix on Continental for $800 r/t including taxes.

Good luck!
