Eastern France or Switzerland that's the question.
We have 2 days on the way back to Koln Germany. We'll be travelling by car from the Italian Riveria. Where would you go? Be specific give me a town, hotel. Thanks.

Specifically St Veran. or Molines.<BR><BR>I'm going to plagiarize myself from a recent post on this:<BR><BR>=============================<BR><BR> I will recommend a great place to stay in the French Alps - - the tiny Queyras region, where Hannibal supposedly crossed with his elephants 2000 years ago. I had the pleasure of staying in the town of Molines (and visiting its nearby neighbor, St. Veran, which is supposedly the highest altitude village in all of Europe at 2040 meters) in 1993, and I still remember it as if were yesterday. The hotel I visited now has a website - - http://www.queyras.org/lequipe/ - - how vividly I remember opening the windows to that incredible Alpine air while Madame brings you your breakfast with the best croissants I have ever had in my life!<BR><BR>The more generic website http://www.queyras.org lists other hotels as well. Of course, the Alps are splendid in Austria and Switzerland too.<BR><BR>I've just never had this particular memory surpassed in any of the places across the Alps I've ever visited.<BR><BR>=============================<BR>< BR>To reach the Queyras, you can cross over at Col du Larche, coming up from the Piemonte region of Italy. I did this starting from Ventimiglia, but you can probably go via Turin from any where on the Italian Riviera.<BR><BR>Seond stop, I'll have to be a little bit less specific. Somewhere around Dijon? Beaune?<BR><BR>Or did you mean two days and ONE night? Long ass haul. 6-7 hours each day.<BR><BR>Best wishes,<BR><BR>Rex<BR>

Assuming you want to get from Liguria to Koln in 2 days of driving with a one night stop in between, you'll want to get about halfway the first day, maybe a bit more so you won't have to drive quite so far the second. As Rex said, it's a long 2 days' drive. I would suggest you head north through Milan and on to Lucerne/Zurich, then north toward Strasbourg---all high-speed highways--stopping for the first night in Baden, Switzerland, a beautifully situated and picturesque little village just off the autoroute. Stay at the 3 star Hotel Kappelerhof, telephone 056-2223-834, which has its own private parking, an important consideration when you're driving, and its own restaurant.
