Eastern Belgium
 

Ill be visiting Germany in October around the Mosel valley with a trip to Essen. I was looking at the map and noticed Liege Belgium. I love Belguim beer, and was curious to find out if there are any towns not too far away from Germany, worth a day side trip on the eastern part of Belguim.

Well - Liege is OK, has a couple of museums that were interesting but not that fascinating. We stayed in Spa in a manor house owned by one of Napoleon's Marshals and that was a cute little town.

Have you been to Aachen? If you like history the remains of Charlemagne are wonderful - and there's a cute town center, church, some nice buildings.

Aachen is in Germany, but it would get my vote over Liege any day.

Have you decided against Valkenberg/Maastricht or is this as well as?

I was in Maastricht/Aachen in april. Didn't stop in Liege, but passed by on the train. From a distance, Liege didn't look very picturesque like some of the more pretty towns in western belgium (flanders)or germany, or the netherlands.

But, as a fellow beer lover, i enjoyed the variety of ales in brugge and brussels. brugge is a much more delightful and visually stunning medieval-looking town to visit than Liege - it's just further away. It made for a nice day trip from maastricht but you'd have to start very early in the morning to have more time. aachen is about a 50 minute bus trip (it's the number 4 bus which also stops at the aachen train station & the Gulpener brewery [yes, beer tour]in the netherlands)from maastricht (netherlands) central train station which can get you to either brussels or brugge.

Brugge has many nice cafes/ restaurants where you can enjoy your belgian ales (and pilsners). the only beer still brewed in brugge is Brugse Zot (Brugge Fool) which is a very refreshing blonde ale. have a great trip!!

Well, there's always Bastogne and the Battle of the Bulge Memorial. There's also Dinant which is a scenic town on the Meuse. Bouillion is a picturesque town with a castle in the middle of the river. The castle was once owned by Godfrey of Bouillon, the leader of the first crusade. If you're traveling along the Mosel to Trier, you're right next door to Luxembourg. If you have time, I'd definitely check these out. Heck, I also liked Liege (at least the view from the citadel).

What about Antwerpen? Too far? Great town.
