Easter weekend 2016 Colmar or Zermatt

Hello, We have already decided on our time in Chamonix, Engadine Valley and surrounds. I am now trying to decide where we should spend the Easter weekend (24 - 28 March 2016) before we begin the rest of our travels. We can either spend it in Zermatt and then put Colmar and surrounds at the end of our trip (last week of April) OR we can spend Easter in the Colmar area and then go straight to Zermatt from 28 April. We will be using trains and don't mind a couple of extra hours or doubling back. Our main need it to make sure we are in the right places at various times to enjoy walking around, scenery and good local food (including market food). We do not ski or shop but are not fond of too many queues (we know Easter is a busy time). Thank you for all your help - our trip is all Fodors cyber friends guided.

Zermatt has tons of prepared winter hiking trails through snow and ice. Around Colmar, you will find trails through the wineyards.
The weather will be unpredictable at both places.

I would just look what best fits into your itinerary.

No need to tell you that Zermatt will be expensive over Easter and will get cheaper afterwards.

Thank you, Neckverd. I explained very badly, sorry. It must be frustrating for the advisers.

We are following the itinerary you and Swandiv helped me with but because our arrival time is now earlier there are four extra days to enjoy.

So I was trying to decide whether to bring everything forward by four days which would mean starting with Zermatt over the Easter weekend and adding Colmar on at the end (last few days of April) OR going to the Colmar area for the weekend and then beginning our trip as planned beginning with Zermatt on 29 March.

We have lots of Switzerland in this trip so thought some French towns would be lovely - however, we are open to other ideas too as we do spend time in the Geneva to Sereilhac area with our friends before going off home to dream of our next trip.

We never fuss about the weather as we just enjoy being there and there is always something to do.

Thank you again for all your help.

Colmar for the weekend with a day (at least) in
Basel.

"We never fuss about the weather as we just enjoy being there and there is always something to do."

Just be prepared! I watched the Swiss webcams Friday morning while I had my a.m. coffee and there was fresh snowfall in several spots, including Gornergrat above Zermatt. They showed on the news Friday night photos of measurable fresh snowfall in many places in the Swiss Alps, including some popular villages in the Berner Oberland, like Murren.

Hello, We have really good gear for snow weather and really hope we will be in lots of it. It is one of the main reasons we keep going back to Switzerland. So looking forward to our trip.
