Easter in Rome

Has anyone ever been to mass on Easter Sunday at St. Peter's in Rome? Can lay people just go there, or is the mass only for clergy? Is it hard to get inside the cathedral?
I may want to go if it is not a hassle.

Julia

Julia, We also were thinking about going to St. Peters on Easter. Last post I noticed on this subject mentioned that it would be a trial. Guess it depends if you can deal with the massive crowds, I personally don't know if it would be worth it.

Thanks for those who replied. I am considering just avoiding the area and simply stroll around other parts of the city that day.
I was lucky enough last November while on tour in Rome to just go to St. Peters around 1pm on a Saturday afternoon. To our great astonishment and praise for good timing (devine luck?), the Pope was presiding over a ceremony. When it ended we were right next to the aisle as he passed by in the popemobile. I imagine on Easter, the closest I'll get would be the big-screen tv's in the square.

Julia.
