Easter in Ireland

Our vacation in Ireland will be over Easter week. What is a good city to spend Easter in? We were thinking about Galway.

Galway's a nice city, and you'll find plenty about it in various posts.

Just be aware that many things will be closed from Good Friday through to (including) Easter Monday.

A few yrs ago I spent Easter Sunday in Sligo - not sure if you want to head that far north. As far as things being closed, the scenery, castles, friaries, archaeolgical sights, etc. in the countryside are unaffected by the holiday weekend, needless to say. The pubs may have slightly shortened hours on the weekend.

phh,

Galway is a worthwhile destination for many reasons. The city itself is a lively place, featuring many cultural attractions. If you're into books - particulary Irish-interest works - don't miss Kenny's, located in downtown Galway. It's a literary treasure, featuring a staff that is both knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the world of books.

Galway city is a good base for explorations into the wilds of Connemara and the Aran Islands. If possible, try to spend at least a couple full days exploring Connemara, and try to spend an overnight on Inishmore, the largest of the Aran Islands. Kilmurvey House is a fine accommodation, offering good eats and it's the perfect base for checking out the the island's most noteworthy site, Dun Aengus.

Best of luck
