There are several sites. We prefer to use Ofoto.com. (Shutterfly is another, as is Yahoo.) We have several photo albums on Ofoto and will get up to 100 or so new photo before getting prints made by them. The site is run by Kodak so the development quality is usually fairly good.
Every year or so, we'll get the photos printed onto a CD-Rom.
In terms of sharing, you simply have to e-mail a link to the parties you want to see the photos.
Ofoto doesn't charge for the hosting service or letting other's see your albums.

I like kapture-it.
Check it out at www.kapture-it.co.uk
It is free, easy to upload your pictures, you can write notes near each picture and you can invite your friends to have a look at it giving them a password. They can also write comments near the pictures that they like. I have put my wedding album there and everybody likes it!

A note regarding ofoto: I am German and used my ofoto account only for posting photos on the net. Last week I got an email from them. They wrote my account will be deleted end Sept because I have never purchased anything.
So, if you don't plan to buy prints or so from them I strongly recommend against ofoto. If I had known my albums would be deleted I had not put such a lot of effort in building them (uploading, text etc.).

I like dotphoto, too. One of the best things for me is that I can get matte finish, which I prefer.
I also like that it's easy to add titles and descriptive text. Personally, when I visit photo websites where the photos aren't labeled and with a little descriptive text, I quickly lose interest.

Here's a link to a recent lengthy thread on the same topic that you might find useful.

I like Blogger. It is elegant and easy-to-use, and I can write a travel blog to accompany the photos if I so wish. And it's free!
Take a look at my first effort:

I like MSN Spaces. It's entirely free, you get gobs of space, it's easy to learn to use, and has lots of options for formatting. There is also a blog feature if you want to post your journal.
Mine is below. I made a separate "album" for each segment of my recent Switzerland trip so someone can easily move to photos of a particular region. Later, I added other albums for past trips.
