Try to stay somewhere close to but away from the Stradum. If several cruise ships dock at the same time, thousands of people jam the streets of old city Dubrovnik at once and it is not pleasant.
Consider flying on or driving to Split, which is beautiful with a lovely esplanade and residential areas. Although cruise ships also stop there and Diocletian's Palace is mobbed, it is still less crowded. |
We are going to stay a few km from Dubrovnik, splitting our time in two hotels, one in Lapad (about a 15 minute walk from the Old Town) and the other in Babin Kuk, and with the car that we will rent at the airport, we will have time to relax and take day trips.

You don't need to "bring" anything. Just use your debit card and get money from ATMs. Use your cc for large purposes and don't get sucked into a currency conversion scam (i.e., don't agree to pay for anything, or get money from an ATM, in dollars instead of the local currency).

Thanks, StCirq. The only issue is that many times, using a debit card attracts an unfavourable conversion rate and occasionally, bank fees. I am able to get a very good rate on conversion at a local FX office, so I will convert some money so I am not caught without at least some cash.
However, should I 'bring' Euros, Kunas or both? |

Quite the opposite IME. As for bank fees, that's dependent on where you choose to bank. There are options for banking at institutions that don't impose fees. I would bring Kunas. You may find people and places that would accept euros, but that could mean an unfavorable rate of exchange. IMO it's always best to handle transactions in the local currency. |
I will call my bank today and ask what their conversion rate is using their debit card before going to exchange cash.

It's fine to call your bank, but the exchange rate changes all the time, so on any given day if you withdraw cash from an ATM with your debit card, the amount you receive will differ.

I know that the exchange rates change on a daily basis. I was calling my bank to compare today's bank exchange rates with that of the FX office to see if they are comparable so I can feel comfortable that the bank is not gouging me, with the idea that any difference between the rates today will be the same over the next few weeks.

Hi Underhill. We arrived in Dubrovnik yesterday and we are just loving it. Nice is a great choice but we spent time there a few years back and wanted to discover someplace new. Thanks for the suggestion though.
