Early October Weather in NE France?
We are planning to spend the first week of October visiting some of the notable WWI sites NE of Paris. Those might include Belleau Woods, Meuse-Argonne, & Verdun. We are trying to plan our packing and are wondering what the weather might be like? Will jeans and water-repellent jackets with hoods be OK? Also, will casual American dress be acceptable or will we need to be prepared to "dress up?"

Weather can be nice. Will probably not be. I would expect rain clouds wind and not very hot. But clearly no frost.
Dressing up ? No way. Unless your definition means something slightly better than flip flops. I don't know what casual American means. A pair of jeans correct shoes and a shirt are absolutely more than ok. Plus a pull over and a jacket and an umbrella or hat. |
We stayed in Nancy the last 2 weeks in Sept 2 years ago, and it was rather chilly. Needed jackets most of the time. "Dress up" - coats & ties - never - we dined at some of the best/fanciest restaurants in town.

Who knows weather is a magic thing which can throw nasties into the mix. Sometimes you can get terrible storms other times the weather can be just calm and sunny.
If anyone here tells you how it is going to be they are wasted on this forum maybe they should work for a weather forecasting company. They need some knowledgable folks to work for them. |
Have you checked web-sites that provide detailed weather and climate statistics? My favorite is timeanddate.com; others prefer wunderground.com, but you have TONS of options, and most guidebooks will say something about typical historic weather patterns.
My strategy: be prepared for rain, hot to cold temps, etc. Take layers and weather gear. Jeans are incredibly heavy if wet. I have NEVER traveled with jeans, and won't ever do so. I will also never travel with flip-flops -- not enough support for roads that might be cobbled or steeply sloped or ... I rely on some versatile options that can be dressed up or down, and can be layered. Good luck! |
Maybe a couple of pairs of medium-weight chinos (Dockers), couple of long-sleeved shirts, couple of long-sleeved t-shirts. Cotton blend socks - no rain boots - but non-slip tread shoes, well-broken in before you go. Maybe bring 2 pair if they get wet.
A below the knee raincoat with a hood. Umbrellas are useless in the wind. Maybe a medium weight scarf. Unless you plan to visit a Michelin starred restaurant, every other place is casual. |
Interesting... my list is SOOoooo very different than fuzzbucket's! I would NEVER take a below-the-knee raincoat -- too heavy! But a hooded high-tech rain jacket, for sure. I haven't traveled without Goretex-lined shoes for a decade. I use only wool socks, even for climates as hot and humid as Indonesia. I always travel with a SILK scarf and silk gloves and -- depending on the location and likely weather -- other silk (super light weight) items. I take only layer-able items, carefully selected to maximize interchangeability depending on weather and use.
And many other differences! But i agree: only shoes that you have broken in very well. And at least 2 pair. |
