Early April to Rome and sorrento, capris or long pants for women?

So hard this time of year... Temps in 50's and 60's. are Italians still in long pants? I am a new englander and it sounds warm to me!

Italian women will be wearing wool winter coats in early April.

I would bring long pants since the temps may be in the 60s but this is probably afternoon high. Once the sun sets it will be colder and damp. If the day is overcast then it will feel cooler. Don't forget about those April showers. It will be colder in the mornings and have you ever been in a marble or stone church? It can be exceptionally cold, even when it's sunny and warm outside.

Sorrento will probably be colder and damper than Rome. I remember once it was raining in Sorrento (late April) and I layered practically all my clothing to stay warm. I got some strange looks at my outfits but I did not want to freeze.

Been to Italy several times in April, and needed a jacket and sweater everywhere - no short pants, no sandals. It was only warm enough to take the jacket off for a few hours on sunny days.

Rome is also very cool at night.Besides the weather is not what it used to be and anything can happens in April..

Bring some closed in walking shoes,a light all weather coat or a jacket ..You can always buy a cheap umbrella from the vendors.

Have Fun..I will be there in September..

Cold is in the eye of the beholder - and to a New Englander - yes, Rome will seem warm. Do 1 capri if you want - but I would bring mostly long pants. (And i have been there in April with a tissue weight jacket and May - no jacket -but I prefer cool to warm).

Thank you all! Simple insightful answers, just what I needed. I will leave the capris at home!

I would check the weather as close to your departure as possible and then decide if you need more than one pair of capris. I was in Rome in mid April with a group of students a few years ago and we wore capris and many of the students wore long shorts and sleeveless tops (they always carried sweaters for visits to churches). Be sure to pack sunscreen or plan to buy some, we were all sunburnt after our outdoor tour of the Roman ruins.
