Earl's Court Station Question

It's zone question time again. In previous post, indicated my parents, who will be going for a week in London, are now of age where they become anxious over small details. I have related to them that the veterans on this board have indicated the following:

Price for zones 1 and 2 travelcard are pretty much the same for London Visitors Travelcard and regular Travelcard for the seven day period. If one can order the Visitor's card without shipping costs, then it might be worth it,however...

...the real savings is if one buys only the regular Zone 1 travelcard. As suggested by the posters, I went to the london transport site and looked at all the tourist attraction locations. 99.9% were in Zone 1.
Checked out tube station locations, too. You guys were right.

OK. Passed all this information on to Mom and Dad, but my father is anxious because the stop "Earl's Court" is listed as Zone 1 and 2. He wants to see something out there (I haven't a clue as to what)and he's worried that he can't get back on the tube for the return trip with his Zone 1.

Can anyone enlighten me? I'm assuming he'll be fine using the Zone 1 to get back on.

Hi Amy,

Well, I'm pretty sure Earl's Court is Zone 1, but if he needs to go to Zone 2, all you have to do is pay a supplemental fare for the next zone. It's not like he'll get stuck.

Buy Zone 1, and supplement as needed. Hope this helps!

Karen

Earl's Court is a boundary station (as is Notting Hill Gate)...what does that mean?

If you get on at Earl's Court and head say towards Victoria (zone 1) you are considered to be in zone 1 the whole time. Similarly coming back from any zone 1 station....you are considered to have been in zone 1 all the time.

OTOH if you get on at Earl's Court and head west towards Heathrow, you are considered to have gotten on at a zone 2 station and the fare is considered zone 2 - 6 so people with a zone 1 travelcard pay a slightly higher supplement (20p) than people with a zone 1 & 2 travelcard. The big savings is people buying a single to Heathrow are considered to have gotten on in zone 2 and pay the zone 2 - 6 fare (£2.20) vs. the zone 1 - 6 fare (£3.60) quite a significant savings.

Similarly coming in from Heathrow. If you get off at Earl's Court it's cosidered a zone 6 to zone 2 trip.

So going westbound Earl's Court is in zone 2. Going eastbound it is zone 1.

Some stations are classed as being Zone 1 and zone 2 as they are right on the boundary. I'm not sure if Earls Court is, but assuming it is then if you travelled there from within zone 1 then you wouldn't have to pay a supplement, but if you went any further then you would.

Earl's Court station is in both zone 1 and zone 2, and the turnstiles will accept tickets valid in either zone. If you are travelling to or from a station in central London (zone 1), a zone 1 ticket will cover Earl's Court. If you are travelling to or from anywhere further out (zones 2-6), a zone 2 ticket will also be valid at Earl's Court.

Amy,
I've found this link useful.

http://www.thetube.com/

If you dig into the site more, you'll find this page:
http://www.thetube.com/cgi-bin/tpquery3.exe?EntryType=Stations
Which allows you to enter origination and destination, then see what zones you cross.

Thank you, all of you. I feel we have the total picture and can assure them.

Will be posting next question on another thread--yes, it's the inevitable Gatwick Express question. Just forgive me ahead of time!
