Eagles Nest or Munich 3rd Reich Tour

We have to make a choice. We can either see Hitler's Eagle Nest or go on the Munich 3rd Reich walking tour. We also have a trip planned to see Dachau Concentration Camp. Can you give me some advice on these two?

Thanks

I haven't done the Munich Third Reich tour, but I have done an interesting tour run by Americans to the Obersalzberg, the Eagle's Nest (or Kehlstein, as the Germans call it), and the bunker system for the Nazi officials. There's also a Third Reich museum there, as I recall.

If the day is clear, the Kehlstein offers spectacular views of the surrounding mountains.

The "Eagle's Nest" or Kehlsteinhaus as it is locally called has spectacular views if the weather is good. When I was there it was cloudy and you could barely see 100 feet. Still, there is a bit of history there even though Adolf didn't care for the place. The visit was part of a day tour that was booked through the tourist centre in Berchtesgaden. It included a visit to Obersalzberg, a brief visit to the museum there and the bus ride up to the elevator.

On that trip I also visited Dachau. I must say with all the books and tv shows on the subject of camps, nothing can prepare you for the feeling when you're actually standing there, maybe in front of the ovens or gas chamber, and realize what happened. The camp has been sanitized for the tourist but well worth the visit. The museum is very moving. Be sure to get the audio guide.

The actual town of Dachau is worth a visit as well.

My husband and I went to Dachau and did the Munich 3rd Reich walking tour in May. The 3rd Reich tour shows you around Munich and some buildings and places where Hilter & the SS had meetings and offices etc. We liked this tour in addition to seeing Dachau.

My husband is a history nut. That is why we did both.

We also went to Eagle's Nest. If you have to choose, I would say Eagle's Nest & Dachau. We took a tour to Eagle's Nest with an American guide. Real interesting, we got alot more information with the guide on some of buildings on the way up to Eagle's Nest.
Hope this helps

I found the camp at Dachau very sobering, but there seems to be clear official testimony that no-one was ever gassed to death at Dachau. Many thousands died in all manner of revolting ways, but gassing was not one of them. Google "Gassing at Dachau" for further information.
