Eagles nest or Brixen Italy

My family will be in Garmish in June and have the choice of several tours. One is to go to the Eagles nest and the other is Brixen & Vipiteno Italy going thru Brenner Pass. Price is about the same. I cannot find anything on the Italy trip so I am not sure which we would see more. Any info is appreciated!

Hi Debra - Vipiteno and Brixen are both attractive Tyrolean towns on the edge of the Dolomites.

It would be a shame to get so close and not to see the Dolomites proper - e.g Val Gardena or Val Badia.

Where are you travelling from? It may be possible to see more if you go independantly - by car or by public transport ...

We will be on a tour from a resort at Garmisch. The description is thru Brenner pass to these 2 towns, tour a medieval castle and on to shop. The Eagles Nest is somewhere my son thought he might like to see and me and my daughter would go to Italy. We only have 4 days in this area and have plans for the other days.

Interesting that they use the German name for one town (Brixen) and Italian for the other. The castle at Vipiteno (Sterzing) must be Reifenstein, a lovely medieval castle. Rick Steves, a travel writer, loves this castle. Here's what his guide has to say about it:

"Reifenstein offers castle connoisseurs the best-preserved original medieval castle interior I’ve ever seen. The lady who calls the castle home takes groups through in Italian, German, and “un poco Anglaise” (open Easter-October, tours daily except Friday; Tel. 0472-647-196). You’ll discover the mossy past as she explains how the cistern collected water, how drunken lords managed to get their keys into the keyholes and how prisoners were left to rot in the dungeon (you’ll look down the typical only-way-out hole in the ceiling). In the only surviving original knights’ sleeping quarters (roughhewn plank boxes lined with hay), you’ll see how knights spent their nights. Lancelot would cry a lot."

Bressanone\Brixen has a lovely old town area. I assume this is where the shopping part of the tour will be.

FWIW - there's nothing scenic about the highway over the Brenner Pass...

A trip up to Hiltler's Eagle's Nest was an incredible experience for us.
Besides the history, the views from the top are beautiful.

Vipiteno or the Eagle's Nest??? Eagle's Nest. Then spend some time wandering Berchestgarden. Nice town.

The Eagles Nest is really interesting if you include the history and the beautiful views. We had done our homework and found it fascinating.

>how do you compare this to going to the eagles nest or can you compare it?<

I think it depends on the weather. Eagle's Nest - Yes (but only if the skies are clear).
