Eagle's Nest (Berchtesgaden) and Grossglockner in one day?

Hi

The title says it: in late May (longer hours) do you think it's possible to wake up in Berchtesgaden.. see the Eagle's Nest... and then get on the road and give justice to the Grossglockner, with the night's destination in Heiligenblut?

Also, any ideas for hotels or B&Bs in both places would be nice. Many thanks!

Yes, it is doable, but it is a shame to drive the Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse in a rush. Edelweissspitze and Franz-Josephs-Höhe are two side trips from that street that both take about an hour each and that you MUST do. So better cut time from Eagle's Nest.

Sorry, no personal experiences with acc. in both places.

Thanks Ingo, much appreciated! I suppose we could cut the Eagle's Nest entirely. I am really looking forward to the Grossglockner drive, I wasn't sure how much time to allow for it.

In leaving Munich, before entering the actual drive - would Berchtesgaden even be a logical place to stay for the night or should we just keep going until we hit something closer? I don't know what time we are leaving Munich - my guess is late afternoon, with a stay somewhere along the path to the Grossglockner.

If you want to see Berchtesgaden then stay there. It is not really necessary, though. You could easily take a different route - via Kufstein and Kitzbühel would be nice (stay in Kitzbühel e.g.), but you also could make it to Zell am See that afternoon and stay there. This would allow you to really spend the full day on the Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse. Perfect IMO.

We visited the Eagle's nest in Sept 2005. From the time we parked until we left, it took maybe 3 1/2 to 4 hours and we had lunch at the restaurant in the nest. We were staying in Salzburg, did the nest and drove to Munich. We left the Kohlpeter b&b at 8:30 am and checked into the K+K am harras by 3:00 pm with stops along the way.

Thank you again Ingo - I was also thinking of Zell am See on one end of it. Although per pinchme's post - if we happen to leave Munich early enough we might even get to the Eagle's Nest that very day and spend time there, stay overnight, and Grossglockner the very next morning all day - maybe I'll just wait to see if that happens, to decide if we try to add that to the itinerary.

I'm much more excited about the Grossglockner for this trip. I've actually been to Berchtesgaden - we didn't make it to the Eagle's Nest that time either.

Yes, that's another option. However, I don't really know why Eagle's Nest is so popular on Fodor's. I'd rather spend my time elsewhere in the mountains.

As for Großglockner - I just hope the weather co-operates. When I did it the weather was gorgeous (late Oct) and the mountains had fresh snow. Definitely spend most of your time at the Franz-Joseph's-Höhe from where you should do a short walk/hike towards the end of the valley - away from the crowds. Just a half hour or so one way would be fine.
