Eagle's Nest & Auschwitz Questions - Germany & Poland

Eagle's Nest - Will be in Munich for the last week of April. Is Munich to the Eagle's Nest a possible day trip? If so, how - train or bus tour? To Berchtesgaden? How long to get there?

Where can I find info on the Eagle's Nest? Everytime I find info, I'm re-routed to the Obersalzberg Dokumentation website & that doesn't mention the Eagles Nest. Need to know the hours, etc.

Auschwitz - I found the official website. Will be in Berlin from May 5 to 12th, 2010. Is Berlin to Auschwitz a possible day trip? Looks too far, I think, but thought I would check with some Fodorites. On bahn.de, it appears the train trip is 10 hours or more, but then I don't really know what I am doing on the site - does that time seem correct? If so, obviously not a day trip, unless someone has learned how to fold space!

So, if a day trip is out from Berlin to Auschwitz, what city would be best to use for a day trip and a good city to overnite - Krakow? I don't know.....seems out of the way from Berlin to fly to Krakow just for 2 nites to see Auschwitz!

Eagle's Nest is Kehlsteinhaus. I went there last June by bus from Berchtesgaden. If you google it, you will get pictures and info. It takes about two and a half hours by train to Berchtesgaden. Then you can take the bus from the train station. You can do it on a day trip if you don't mind the time on the train. I really enjoyed visiting Eagle's Nest and the views are beautiful.

I have not been to Auschwitz, so I can't help with that.

I think Eagle's Nest is not open until the end of May.

Have you thought about going to Sachsenhausen and / or Ravensbruck Concentration camps from Berlin instead of going all the way to Auschwitz? These are easy, day trips.

Krakow is only 30 miles from Auschwitz..frequent busses.
Good roads and signage if driving. Be sure to visit BOTH I and II (Birkenau).

Thanks so much everyone. But sadly, for us anyway, you are correct scatcat - the Eagle's Nest does not open until middle of May, after we are gone from Germany. So, that is out for this trip. Thanks also for the name; googled it & got the info I needed. In case anyone else reads this thread for info, website for Eagle's Nest info is http://www.kehlsteinhaus.de/en/.

Thanks nancicita & tower for the Krakow info. But sadly it appears that this is too far for a day trip from Berlin & we don't have time on this trip for transport to Krakow & overnite(s) there. So, no Auschwitz either.

Probably sounds like our trip is becoming a bust, but we have other great places going good for our visit. So, we just have a couple more reasons why we will need to return to Germany - not a bad thing at all!

Mainhattengirl, we are considering Sachsenhausen. We also have the options of Dachau from Munich & Mauthausen from Vienna. So, we'll make a choice from those three. Of the three, I've read that Mauthausen has the best presentation.

Thanks everyone. It appears that with everyone's help, this thread is finalized!

Julie, not all is lost: The main appeal of the "Eagle's Nest" (Kehlsteinhaus) is its view. Otherwise, it is really a mediocre restaurant near the top of the Kehlstein Mounatain, which happend to be built as Hitler's Tea House.

Now, for the view: Between the Betchtsgaden RR station and the Koenigsee (lake) is a gondola ski lift that takes you up to near the top of the Jenner Mountain. You can take the train from Munich to Berchtesgaden, and right in front of the station is the stop for the Koenigsee bus. The trip takes about 25 minutes. Usually, except on weekends, the lines for the Jennerbahn aren't bad. And the views really are great, even as you ascend the mountain. On top i9s a footpath, usually well plowed, to the top of the mountain. Just wear some sturdy shoes.

For the train trip, up to 5 of you can ride on the same Bayernkarte/Bavaria Ticket for EUR28, round trip and all over Bavaria. Lmitations: On weekdays, you have to wait until 9AM to take the first train, and you are limited to Regio Trains (no IC, ICE, etc. fast trains). But on this stretch it doesn't make much of a difference.

If you want to, and are willig to make it a long day, you can take the bus from B'gdn to Salzburg and return by train to Munich, still on the same Bayernkarte. Check www.bahn.de for schedules.

Julie,

I have been to Krakow, Auschwitz 2 years back.
I have also been to Dacau- 30 min. from Munich.
I found Dacau more touching and moving, though Auschwitz and neighbouring Birkenau ( Bigger and more notorious than the prior)
Dacau has a Gas chamber, which was never used. But the exhibits are chilling. You will not miss anything. If given a chice of revisiting one of them; I will choose Dacau.
It is very much within your reach. Don't miss it. It's a once in a lifetime experirence. Please eat well and go there, as my wife couldn't eat anything for sometime after the visit.

I am visiting Munich again in 1st week of May, after 10 years.
Am planning to visit Eagle's nest and Fussen.

all the best to you.
DON'T MISS DACAU.

Thanks Paragkash, for your info. Our Munich activities are decided & we do plan a day trip to Dachau.

Hope your trip to Munich is enjoyable. However, re: the Eagle's Nest, their website indicated it will not open until middle of May. So you may want to be sure it is open before you take the trip.

all the best to you also, Julie
