e.readers on planes.

I will be taking my Kobo glow on an overseas flight. I am wondering if anyone has felt the light from these wonderful 'books' can be intrusive on an overnight flight?

greg Apr 7th, 2013 06:17 AM

Intrusive for you or for the others? You can test it for you on your own at home. For others, why worry when they are watching movies on even bigger and brighter iPads! I use a Kindle paperwhite which can be dimmed darker than the Kobo.

I would find it intrusive. I don't watch movies on planes but I do try to sleep/doze. If someone next to me had a glowing light it would be annoying. I hope I never have to find out.

Bring a book to read.

But if someone were reading a paper book they would need to have the light on, that would be more intrusive I think.

I can't see how it is any worse than the overhead light on, or someone using their tablet or laptop.
My e-reader is a Sony without back-lighting so I need the overhead light on to read it.
If someone finds it intrusive they only have to say so, politely of course!

jamikins Apr 7th, 2013 10:33 AM

Agreed...the overhead light is just as annoying. I always use my kindle with its light and find it fine, hubby sleeps like a baby beside me and I am just cognisant of where the light is o to not disturb others. The fact that you are even asking makes me think you will be polite to others in its use.

We've never had an issue with light from an ereader on an overnight flight. Is a great travel companion for long journeys! Have a great trip!

Everyone who wants to sleep on a plane should bring a sleep mask if light bothers them.

Seamus Apr 7th, 2013 11:28 AM

Much less intrusive than overhead light. My SO is practically phobic about lights in the bedroom and even he tolerates my bedtime ritual of reading on my iPad. Would not worry about it.

justineparis Apr 7th, 2013 11:38 AM

Well unless you are in a middle seat I think it would be very easy to slightly turn so the reader is not facing person next to you directly..

I also agree a person should bring a mask if they want dark,, its not up to everyone else to be on your schedule, what if you want to sleep at 9 and others wish to watch their movies etc till 11 etc.. sure they are wearing earphones but screen light is screen light.

Are people really bothered by their neighbors' overhead light when their eyes are closed? I don't even notice it.

gh21 Apr 7th, 2013 04:10 PM

I think e- readers and iPads are now used by many people and should be accepted as such. They are not any different than someone sitting next to you using a laptop to watch a video or do work.

Dukey1 Apr 7th, 2013 04:19 PM

You know THESE DAYS if you are a really SMART traveler you don't get on a plane HOPING anything, including that the person next to you is not going to have some sort of e-reader, etc.

Rather than hoping you really need to BE PREPARED with whatever it takes for you to get some rest sleep whatever and not have to depend on other things "not happening."

cathies Apr 7th, 2013 04:22 PM

I'd at her have an e-reader beside me than someone incessantly rustling a magazine. It wouldn't bother me a bit.

cathies Apr 7th, 2013 04:23 PM

Sorry, massive typo.

I'd rather....

Gretchen Apr 7th, 2013 05:27 PM

Oh, please. If the person next to you cannot sleep with that glow, they aren't gonna sleep anyway. Enjoy it. But maybe just go to sleep!!

basingstoke2 Apr 7th, 2013 06:53 PM

As onetwo says, seat neighbors should bring a sleep mask if light bothers them.
