duty free cognac in spain?

Hola!
am in spain at the moment and have noticed that spirits (of the alcoholic kind) are pretty cheap in the shops. does anyone know if it would be cheaper to buy cognac from a supermarket than wait for the duty free shops in the airport?
Gracias

Hi L,

Duty free shops rarely have lower prices than can be found in town.

Go to Club El Gourmet in the Corte Ingles. They have Tanqueray No. 10 gin which is around 40GBP in London, they have it for 33EUR. What a bargain!

Most professionally-run airport duty-free shops offer, in principle, lower prices than in city centres. You can check whether this is true is your case by going to the promociones section at www.aldeasa.es.

But remember, you can't get duty-free prices at the airport if your immediate ongoing destination is another EU country. Aldeasa might be offering deals nonetheless (their sherry and manzanilla prices seemed especially keen the other week), and even their duty-paid prices for spirits and fortified wines (though not necessarily for table wine) are a great deal cheaper than in shops in Scandinavia or the British Isles.

aldeasa allows everyone to buy duty free now.. i assume because it really isn't "duty free" anymore. at times there are good deals.. but not FABULOUS ones.

if you sign up for the "aldeasa card", they actually give you "free money" to use there, and also a percentage return on everything you buy through them presenting the card. (it is NOT a credit card).

to get best prices on non-gourmet drinks, try the hipermarkets.(carrefour, alcampo). you MAY find better prices. small bodegas will sometimes have a nice selection as the mentioned club de gourmet at corte inglés.

Hi lordloppy !

The only problem I can see is that probably the selection will be bigger in the high street, unless you are flying from places like Barajas or Barcelona. The selection is quite good there, specially regarding spanish wine.

Flanneruk is right about not being able to get duty-free prices if you are in an inland or intra-EU flight, although in some cases they are still quite interesting.

If you are interested in wine, and are in Madrid or Barcelona, check Lavinia. They have a great selection, and it is very recommendable :

It's a matter of availability: You may find many brands of Spanish Brandy in the duty-free shops but they generally stock the 'top shelf' stuff (Cardenal Mendoza, for ex.). I bought some Orujo de Liebana and some Manzanilla (Sherry) wine from Sanlucar de Barrameda but the duty free shops carry neither of those. The same is the case for Rosal or Albarinho wines from Pontevedra

Err ... Ned, sorry, but you are wrong ... Maybe tiny duty-free shops donīt stock orujo or Albariño or manzanilla, but I can certainly tell you that Barajas has a pretty good selection (I should know about it, having bought two bottles of Santiago Ruiz last Friday, and having thought also of getting one of orujo ...).

The selection is very good, not your usual Martin Codax stuff, and the same can be said for the Somontanos or other wines ...

BTW, lordploppy, I gave you the wrong address : http://www.lavinia.es
