Dutch Cuisine Now Includes Bugs, Worms, etc.

A Cotsco-like big box store with dozens of locations across Holland is now actively marketing a mixture of insects and worms, etc as a food staple for Dutch folk and is gaining some traction, according to a detailed story in the NYTimes yesterday.

The story mentions that such foods are not only eminently edible but are healthy and are better for the environment than say raising corn to feed cattle and meat, etc.

Though the bug dealer has yet to 'get the bugs out of' his scheme when in Holland you may want to drive some worms or insects for a Dutch culinary treat!

Sligro is a supplier to hotels and caterers.

They don't sell bugs at the local supermarket, though no doubt a few brave restaurateurs will have them on the menu at some point.

No problem with that at all.

hetismij - the article has a picture of a guy outside a box store serving up samples of insects and worms to customers and contains comments from the samplers.

I never knew there was such a thing as Dutch "cuisine."

Dutch cuisine - Frites Speciall slathered in ground up worms.

mmm .. lekker!

hetismij Mar 22nd, 2011 10:11 AM

Well I'll let you know when Albert Heijn start selling them, or my local restaurants for that matter.

Can't be any worse than prawns after all.

Lacking an real Dutch cuisine I guess worms and bugs could well be the Nouveau Dutch Cuisine!

hetismij Prawns -crabs etc are just insects of the sea...according to my wife.

The_lonely_traveler Mar 24th, 2011 05:46 AM

@hetismij: did you check your local Dirk or C1000 supermarkets? :^/

It can't be worse than your typical US- or Brittish dishes though :-D
