Duration of 4th July holiday
How long does the 4th July holiday last? Just one day or the whole weekend? This may seem out of place on the European board, but I've tried renting a car for France through National, but I believe I might actually be dealing with a company in the US. I've been waiting for about 4 days (excluding weekends) for their response. And then a little while ago I remembered that the 4th July is a big thing in the US and if I am dealing with a US company that would explain the delay in their response.

The holiday is only one day, yesterday. Since it was on a Tuesday this year, many companies also were closed on Monday, and may have left early on Friday.
However, if you have "been waiting for about 4 [business] days", there may be a problem with the agency itself. Additionally, a large company like National has a toll-free customer service number that is available 24/7. Maybe the phone number/email address you have is incorrect? Have you tried AutoEurope? They usually have good rates for France, and often use National (EuropCar in France).

The fact that the 4th is a major US holiday should have had no impact whatsoever if you are using one of the major (US) car rental company's computerized reservation system to make reservations in Europe.

Thanks.
I also emailed them sometime last week asking for an international phone number to call (from Australia) as they only seemed to have the toll free number on their site, which I don't think I can use. No response there either.
ggreen, I've looked at the Autoeurope site and they seem to show vehicles that I've tried booking direct through other companies with no success. I'm still hoping (in vain?) to book an automatic, which always seems to require a confirmation period.

speckles, try http://novacarentals.com
I booked an automatic Mercedes A Class for France at an excellent price online, better than Autoeurope would do.

Jody, thankyou, Thankyou, THANKYOU. After trying numerous car hire companies and numerous car hire agents I was finally able to get an automatic through Nova Car Hire! They've contracted it through Europcar even though I was unable to get an automatic through Europcar myself. I had just about exhausted my options.
