Dumb Question - How do I make a phone call to Scotland?
 

I'm embarrased to say that I don't know HOW to actually place a phone call to Scotland. I'm finalizing some reservations and I need to fax the hotel some information. They've provided me with their fax number, which is 2 sets of numbers with 5 "numbers" in each set.<BR>Isn't there a country code and (I think) a city code I need to have, and I believe I've heard something about dropping the first "zero" in the number? HELP!!!!!!!!!

Hi Pam. I work for a company that does a lot of international business, but I was clueless about making an overseas call the first time someone handed me something to fax! Anytime you make a phone call overseas, the 1st three numbers you must dial are "0-1-1" The country code for Scotland is "44". If there is a zero after the 44, drop that. Hope this helps!

I believe there are dialing instructions in front of your telephone book. The operator can help also.

Frank is wrong! I send faxes to the UK everyday! The first five numbers you need to dial are "0-1-1-4-4".

Yo,<BR>"0-1-1" is the international portal number from US phones, to be followed by the country code. Different phone systems have different ways to preface the country code, for which 44 is the code for Britain, 1 for the US, etc. Most telephone directories explain this.

So if the UK number you have been given is for example 01604 123456 (when dialed in the UK). Then from the US you would dial 01144 1604 123456<BR>01144 being the international dial code to get you onto the UK phone system.<BR><BR>In the UK the first numbers of the telephone number (usually 4 or 5 numbers)refer to the town/city you are phoning and gets you into that towns network, for example 01604 is the code for Northampton, but dialing from another country as said before you use the international dial code and miss out the 1st "0". The last few numbers usually 6, sometimes 7 in large cities are the person or businesses actual contact number. These two sets of numbers are usually separated by a space.
