Dubrovnik Under Siege from Tons of Floating Debris!
http://www.thedubrovniktimes.com/new...loating-debris
Saw these shocking photos yesterday on BBC TV - tons of garbage including all kind of flotsam and jetson that allegedly has been blown over from nearby Albania. Cleanup is very tedious and could last a while. What does Albania and another nearby country accused do with their garbage - throw it into the sea. Weird winds this time blew it into Dubrovnik, a incredibly gorgeous city surrounded on most sides by the now filty sea. |
I would not be so quick to blame it all on Albania. Croatia has a garbage problem itself (as does everywhere, sadly)--that is why they "clean the beaches" in spring. If there were not so many islands and coastline, it would be even more obvious.
I know it is medically life-saving, but I'd give a lot to be able to go back to pre-plastic times. |
Does this mean that because we can see it, this garbage is worse than the enormous, in part American, version circulating in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, which we can't see?
"Currents carry debris from the west coast of North America to the gyre in about six years..." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_..._garbage_patch |
When we were there several years ago, our local guide was very critical of the cruise ships that come in and often leave their garbage etc. According to her, the passengers spend an hour or two in the town, but a postcard and an ice cream and leave doing little to help the local economy. Now while the cruise ships do pay fees for docking in their waters, the locals feel it hardly makes up for the damage done and with virtually nothing going to the local businesses.

A few years ago we were in Nice .It was early May and rather warm .
MH decided to go for a swim. He came out of the sea immediate..there was the worts kind of waste floating in the water not far from the shore. Yuck! |
Everytime you use a piece of plastic, there is another piece of plastic that needs throwing away, now tell me, where is "away"?
Oh yes, the answer is mainly the sea or a hole in the ground. Try to not use a piece of plastic for just one day... going to be tough...... but just try. World is plastic addicted. |
This sounds like a Daily Mail headline.

Don't blame Albania or the cruise ships. The Mediterranean Sea is just full of garbage!
All depends on the winds and currents. Even at tiny Islands far away from any big city, you find beaches full of garbage. |
"...plastic that needs throwing away, now tell me, where is "away"?"
In the recycle bin, of course. |
