I just got back from traveling in the Balkans for 15 days. I covered 11 cities in 8 countries, and one of the highlights was Dubrovnik in Croatia.

The city's beauty is unparalleled, and the old town is one of the most stunning I have ever seen. The restaurants served excellent seafood and the weather was amazingly hot for the time of year.

I only had two days to spend in Dubrovnik, which was a shame because there is far more to do there than I could cover in that amount of time. Still, I was able to see the historic parts of the city and take the new cable car up to the viewing platform at the top of the mountain. Last time I was in Dubrovnik in 2003, the platform was still a bombed-out remain from the war, so it was nice to see that it had been restored.

What concerns me is these giant cruise ships that are swamping beautiful, ancient, small cities like Dubrovnik with thousands and thousands of visitors all at once. It really spoils the flavor and feeling that one expects from one of these places. Kotor, Montenegro, was a classic example too. Tiny walled town with two jumbo cruise ships docked on same day. Fortunately, we got in and out early, but can't imagine how the tiny town handles these crowds. NW Slovenia was far nicer...beautiful mountains and valleys, lovely people and not crowded. Lake Bled has to be one of the most beautiful places on planet earth

I agree with MDTrav. The cruise ships are swamping ancient cities. To my mind, the passengers from these monster ships
have ruined the magic of Venice and I have heard the same about Dubrovnik. It will only get worse because the newer ships are getting bigger. I did not know that they have invaded Kotor, also.

Eight countries and eleven cities in fifteen days? Yikes! I'm glad you didn't blink or you might have missed Dubrovnik completely.

I'm glad you found it charming, though. I understand they are limiting the number of cruise ships that can visit on any particular day. Still, the lines waiting to get on the ships' tenders at the old port in the burning sun made me hide until they left in the evening. Then the real beauty of the town could be seen.

Well done blog. I like that you've given me a little taste of Dubrovnik. I'm thinking of doing a cabin charter on a small catamaran with some land visits next year. I'm happy to hear that it was very warm.
Can you tell me if the water was choppy? Also did you go to any lower end places to eat?

cybor - The water seemed fine when I was there, but I'm guessing it depends on the season. I didn't end up eating at any lower end places, but I know there are some outside of the old town. Dubrovnik is expensive overall, but if you stray from the touristed areas, you'll find better prices.
